Are Breast Implants a Good Choice For You?

While many women, at one time or another, wish that they could change the shape or size of their breasts, some women choose to take matters into their own hands (or rather, in the hands of a plastic surgeon). For certain women, explains Marc Feldman MD, enhancing the size of their breasts is a financial decision, while for other patients it is about finally feeling comfortable in their own skin. And while breast augmentation is a viable option for nearly any woman, the ideal candidate, he says, is a woman who is in good shape, but who Mother Nature forgot to give breasts to.
Breast implants can really be life altering. As a prominent breast augmentation surgeon in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Dr. Feldman recalls a particular instance where a patient who was an attorney started getting compliments following her breast augmentation surgery. This adjustment did not change her knowledge of the law, but instead gave her the confidence she needed in the courtroom, and soon, she was made senior partner. This subtle change, he explains, made an incredible difference in how she viewed herself and gave her that extra push she needed.
At the same time, Dr. Feldman adds, there are other patients who are not good candidates for the surgery because of the reasons that they are pursuing this change. Some women believe that even though they are 50 pounds overweight, after implants they will be instantly beautiful and fit. Other patients, he says, already have perfect sized breasts for their frames but want to go too big. If your boyfriend is pressuring you into getting implants, then Dr. Feldman says that you do not need a new bra size; you need a new boyfriend.
In fact, it is Dr. Feldman’s responsibility to speak with his patients to decipher the real reasons behind their decisions to move forward with surgery. While he takes care not to sway his patients’ decisions, Dr. Feldman says that his goal is to really get women thinking about why they are looking into surgery. After all, he says, this is not something that you want to regret later in life.
When he speaks with his patients, Dr. Feldman tries to get them to think about the bigger picture and their everyday lives. One patient, he says, brought in her daughter, who expressed that she wanted implants that would make her breasts far too large for her frame. While you may want bigger breasts at 21, you may not necessarily want to be turning heads in the same respect when you are 35. Not to mention, he says, altering your body too drastically could hinder your ability to participate in physical activities such as jogging.
At the same time, Dr. Feldman says that it is never his intention to alienate a patient either. With tactful and detailed conversations, you and your surgeon will be able to settle on a breast size that will look great on you and leave you feeling amazing too.
