Are You Having Cosmetic Surgery For the Right Reasons?

The intended purpose of cosmetic surgery has always been to change an aspect of your appearance that you are not comfortable with or hope to see improved. And while sometimes it may be for health reasons, the changes that you hope to see are usually aesthetic. What cannot be denied, however, is that many patients who visit a plastic surgeon’s office also undergo an internal change in addition to a physical alteration.
The staff at Beautologie Scottsdale, under the direction of Vas Sabeeh, D.O., F.A.C.S., explains that when patients are more at ease with their own appearances, their inner confidence improves as well. At his cosmetic surgery center in Scottsdale, Arizona, Dr. Sabeeh stresses the importance of undergoing an elective procedure for the right reasons. This is not something that you should ever do for someone else, he says; this is a decision that needs to be made based solely on your own needs and desires.
What sometimes becomes misconstrued, however, is the belief that when you change an aspect of your appearance, you will automatically become accepted more, or you’ll be offered more advantages in life. This is not necessarily true, Dr. Sabeeh says. In fact, his staff members goes out of their way to make sure that every incoming patient is evaluated before any surgery takes place. In this hour long consultation, the reasons why you have chosen to undergo this particular surgery and what you anticipate the outcome to be are reviewed. While this is not a counseling session, the staff does try to guide each patient to the understanding that while cosmetic procedures do offer a wonderful opportunity, it should be done as an icing on the cake to all of the other wonderful things you have done for yourself thus far in life. For example, bigger breasts don’t equal more job opportunities; it is your preparation, confidence, and experiences that will help you achieve your dream position. Foremost, you need to be happy and healthy, he adds.
While rare, Dr. Sabeeh says that the occasion arises where the staff agrees that a patient is not quite ready for a procedure. However, instead of turning anyone away from the office, Beautologie Scottsdale’s expert staff offers suggestions for lifestyle changes that should take place prior to surgery. The most common example is that of a patient who wants to lose weight and turns to liposuction as mean to do so. If that patient hasn’t already undergone an exercise and diet plan to shed the extra pounds, then a weight loss plan will be recommended to get the ball rolling.
While Dr. Sabeeh admits that most people don’t come in for plastic surgery because they think they look absolutely amazing already, he prefers to perform surgery on individuals who are around their goal weight and are coming to him for that final tweak. Liposuction is not a means to lose weight, but rather to contour your body to a more desirable shape. Afterward, when your waist appears smaller because it has been recontoured, it can give you the added push to hit the gym again and lose those last few pounds.
Though Dr. Sabeeh and his staff would never want to discourage a patient, they say that is it their responsibility to provide a service that will offer realistic results. If it is suggested that you lose a few more pounds before your tummy tuck or breast lift, it is because the results will only be that much better as a consequence. The last thing Dr. Sabeeh wants is to see a patient gain or lose a large amount of weight after surgery.
When done for the right reasons, cosmetic surgeries offer you the ability to improve not only the way you look, but the way you feel about yourself. In order to make sure that both of these aspects have positive outcomes, it’s important that you reevaluate your reasons for surgery until you are certain that this is a decision that will benefit you first and foremost.
