Many people “shape up” their bodies without ever hitting the gym. Does this make them cheaters or are they smarter than all the rest of us who put our blood, sweat , and tears into workouts which seem to never have the end result we are looking for.

Many people also look to cosmetic procedures to help them regain their youth back. Again, are they cheating or are they just ahead of the game? One company which offers both no-exercise shaping up of the body and facial rejuvenation methods is Arasys Perfector, Inc.

This company claims to go beyond the botox and lasers to help accomplish a younger and healthier appearance. This company used non-invasive electrodermal aesthetics to help create the Arasys and the Perfector.

The Arasys claims to help clients rapidly lose inches as well as build muscles without ever having to step foot in the gym. The Perfector claims to bring a client’s younger facial features back as it rejuvenates the skin and allows for a non-invasive face lift.

These are pretty big claims that this company makes which makes us wonder is it all real or are we just being fooled by another product being offered at the spa?

What is the Arasys?

Remember the pacemaker? The Arasys was actually created by the co-inventor of the pacemaker, Gerry Pollock. The Arasys lets clients to obtain the gym physique without getting up at dawn to run the treadmill or meet up with the trainer.

The Arasys contains up to 1,000 frequencies of high definition signals. The system does not look to encourage muscles instead it aims at the nerves. The nerves which are stimulated during workouts are aroused during the Arasys treatment, allowing the body to “think” it has been working out.

Arasys treatments include, according to Arasys Perfector, LLC, an online resource:

200 Hz:
–Accelerates muscle building
–Increases stamina
–Boosts strength and performance
–Developed for athletes and body builders
–Power detoxification

400 Hz:
–Inch loss
–Tightens abs
–Contours buttocks
–Promotes healthy lymphatic drainage

600 Hz:
–Tightening loose skin (such as after liposuction)
–Breast enhancement
–Revitalizes the body
–Reduces the appearance of cellulite

1000Hz:
–Skin rejuvenation
–Skin toning

(retrieved from www.arasysperfectorusa.com)

What is the Perfector?

Clients looking for a facelift without the surgery may want to opt for the Perfector. This procedure claims to renew skin as it also helps to lift sagging muscles, rebuild tissue, and bring back a healthy glowing appearance. High definition waves are used repair tissue and help bring back a healthy glow.

A thin layer of gel is applied to the area of the face being treated. Then the Perfector, which looks like two metal chopsticks, is then stroked across the area being treated. The Perfector sends signals to the brain and nerves helping for easy stimulation of tissue and muscles.

The nine programs which are offered by Perfector include:

Oxygenation

Regeneration

Lift

Sculpting

Firming

Rejuvenation

Deep cleansing

Detox

Ionization

Who are the Best Candidates?

The best candidates for treatment of either the Arasys or the Perfector will be in optimal psychological and physical health. They will have also consulted with their physician beforehand to ensure that these treatments are safe to undergo.

Those looking to tighten their bodies will be good candidates for the Arasys procedure. One treatment is supposedly the equivalent of 300 to 400 sit ups. Clients wishing to perfect their physique without the gym or undergoing surgery would be great candidates for the Arasys.

Clients looking to have a face lift without the hassle, price, or discomfort of surgery would make good candidates for the Perfector. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and women who have recently given birth may not be good candidates. These women should consult with their physician as well as their obstetrician to ensure safety.

What are the Benefits?

Claimed benefits for the Arasys include:

Inch Loss Treatment: The machine works to tighten muscles and rid yourself of inches. While wraps rid the body of excess water, the Inch Loss treatment actually helps you lose inches from your body. Claims have been made that clients have lost usually 2 to 5 inches from one treatment. The procedure is not painful nor is it uncomfortable.

Cellulite Removal Treatment & Breast/Body Lift Treatment: While the Inch Loss treatment worked to tighten your muscles, this treatment works to create muscles. This helps with lifting breasts, toning the body, underarm toning, and lifting the buttocks.

Detoxification: The Arsys is shown to actually detoxify the body of unhealthy toxins. Galvanic currents are used to help detoxify the body to ensure a cleansing process. Toxins can cause premature wrinkles, sagging, and even disease.

One important benefit of not having to workout at the gym is that the body does not require glucose during these treatments. When an individual works out at the gym glucose levels or better known as sugar levels drop, which is why we are so drained and tired after a workout. With the Arasys, the body is burning fat cells without touching glucose levels.

Claimed benefits for the Perfector include:

Better blood circulation

Blood vessels increase

Decrease in wrinkles

Collagen and elastic increased

Face muscles lifted

Tissue repaired

Skin PH balance

Sun damage reduction

Pigmentation decreased

Pores decreased in size

Inflammation and edema reduced

Impurities in skin removed

Removal of toxins

Puffy eyes reduced

Risks

There is little risk with both the Arasys and Perfector. The one thing which may be of slight discomfort after your Arasys treatment is nausea and the feeling of dehydration. It is recommended that the client drinks plenty of water beforehand as it will give the impression of a workout, tired and needing plenty of water afterwards. This result will vary based on client.

Other than that, the risks are minimal. Oh, wait there is one other risk. What if you are not among the people who lose those 30 inches after 12 treatments or still look exactly the same after 8 sessions with the Perfector? Well then, you did not get your monies’ worth.

As with any procedure, results will vary and you take the chance that you will have a better end result than most. Treatments cost $100 to $250 per session normally. So if you are looking at 10 sessions with only one problem area, your risk losing a couple of thousand dollars.

On the other hand, if the results are great, you may want to keep going back to get more treatments for other problems areas. In this case, you risk losing your bank account…but you will look fabulous.

Some people find it a pain in the neck to look at themselves in the mirror only to see an unsightly neck. The neck may be loose for reasons including genetics, weight loss, or even the aging process. Whatever the reason may be, some may wonder is there anything they can do about it.

A neck lift may be the answer you are looking for. Many celebrities have undergone neck lifts including supermodel Janice Dickinson. According to US Magazine, Janice Dickinson had a neck lift in 2007 along with a tummy tuck. While we may not all be in the limelight like Dickinson, don’t we all deserve to put our best neck forward?

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift usually includes two separate procedures. These procedures are cervicoplasty and platysmaplasty. Cervicoplasty removes the excess skin around the neck while the platysmaplasty changes or removes the neck muscles.

The rolls of skin on your neck are caused by weakened neck muscles and the solution may be platysmaplasty. The platysma is the neck muscle which the surgeon works on to help achieve a smoother looking neck. Openings are usually made near the chin or behind the ears. The doctor then maneuvers the neck muscles around to help the neck retain a younger look. This may mean that the muscles are moved around or even some removed completely.

Less invasive procedures are now available which involve smaller incisions and the use of a endoscope by the doctor. During the procedure, anesthesia would be used and you can even request to be put to sleep, depending on your comfort level.

If extra skin around the neck is an issue, then you may consider a cervicoplasty. During this procedure, the doctor will make small incisions near the ears, cut away loose skin, and lift the remaining skin into place. This leaves the appearance of tighter skin. The skin would be put back into place using stitches or glue.

Both of these procedures can take anywhere from two to fours hours individually. In addition some people opt to also have liposuction or botox of the neck to help with the younger appearance. Depending on the your needs, consultation with the doctor will help set up a neck lift plan suitable for yout.

Who are the Best Candidates of Neck Lifts?

The best candidates would be in the best possible physical and mental well-being. Candidates should have realistic expectations and goals of the neck lift. If a candidate goes in with unrealistic expectations after the neck lift, he could end up having regrets as well as feeling depressed.

Patients should stop using bloodthinning medications and vitamins beforehand as these can increase bleeding after the surgery.

Smokers should stop smoking two weeks prior to the neck lift and continue not smoking for two weeks after the surgery. Smoking can hurt your chances of healing appropriately. You should also maintain healthy eating habits and expect to spend at least one to two weeks in recovery mode.

Benefits

The most obvious benefits from a neck lift would be a more attractive neck. The skin of the neck would be tighter, firmer, and younger looking. This would not only boost your looks but also boost your self-esteem. The neck lift can help you look thinner without having to lose any weight or work at facial or neck exercises.

Risks

While neck lifts are on the less risky side, they do come with some risks as any surgery would. Major risks would include scarring, infections, and results which do not please the client.

Risks of course can be reduced as long as the patient follows before and after care directions as well as sees a licensed professional for the procedure. Some things which a patient should have in the house after the surgery which can help reduce risks include:

Petroleum jelly for the incisions

Ice

Gauze

Thermometer (If fever is present there may be infection, call doctor immediately)

Button-down shirts so that you do not have to remove clothing over the neck

Telephone within reach in case of emergency

Someone should stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery

Risks are few as long as you follow doctor’s orders.

The information in the article is not intended to substitute for the medical expertise and advice of your healthcare provider. We encourage you to discuss any decisions about treatment or care with an appropriate healthcare provider.

As a child, you may have seen an older adult such as your mother or even grandmother poking and prodding at their face while standing in the mirror. Lifting at the temples or by the hairline gaining a tighter appearance, then when their hands left the face…the sagging continued. Lifting near the jaw so that the face looked as if it were being pushed back by a forceful wind.

You may have laughed to yourself, not understanding what they were doing at the time. Now you find yourself in the mirror, pulling and tugging on your face. Thinking about the day when your face did not droop. You are definitely not laughing now.

What can you do about it though? Most creams and moisturizers don’t work and maybe you are scared to “go under the knife.” That’s it then you shall be old looking forever, or is there another way?

What is a Non-Invasive Face Lift?

A non-invasive face lift allows for the face to be lifted and wrinkles reduced without having to undergo surgery. The new non-invasive technique is called threading. Threading allows for corrections of facial problems including:

Mid-face sagging

Elevation of eyebrows

Neck lift

Jaw lift

During the threading procedure, 6 to 18 biocompatible fine threads are used to lift the skin near the jaws, mid-face, neck, and eyebrows. The threads are inserted through the skin and attached to the superficial musculoaponeuronic system (SMAS) which gives the face support.

The skin is then lifted upward and slightly backward to give a natural youthful appearance. The threads are attached either near the temples or in the hairline where they can not be seen. The threads are inserted into small incisions. Scars are minimal and are not noticeable being that there are hidden away.

The non-invasive procedure can vary in length depending on what is being lifted. Facial areas take 30 to 90 minutes. Local anesthesia is used and there is no visible scarring. The recovery period of the procedure lasts three to five days.

Who is a Good Candidate for Non-Invasive Face Lifts?

Real sagging and drooping of the face begins between the ages of 30 to 50. This would be the optimal time to have your non-invasive face lift. A little pull here and there will give a natural and healthy looking face instead of a windblown look. Many people wait until they are well into their 50s or 60s until they consider plastic surgery and the results can be horrific. Many times the surgeries leave people unhappy about their face more so than when they first went in for surgery.

With the threading face lift, individuals do not have to worry about surgery, stitches, long periods of recovery time, and scarring. They also do not have to worry about getting too much of a “drastic” pull of the skin.

Individuals wishing to reduce lines and wrinkles, lift the brows, lift the jowls, and lift the mid-face without the hassle or risk of surgery are good candidates for a non-invasive face lift.

What are the Benefits of the Non-Invasive Face Lift?

Benefits are plentiful when it comes to the threading of the face. Not only is the client getting a more younger and fresh-looking face, but he is obtaining it without having to be cut open. As we all know, many products on the market do not work to help reduce the signs of aging and it seems that the only way people can really turn back time is plastic surgery. The non-invasive face lift has given people another option.

There are minimal scars and the ones you may have will be hidden. There is also no need to lie in bed for weeks in pain with bruising, redness, soreness, and swelling. Imagine having your wrinkles reduced, your brows lifted, and your jowls lifted all on your lunch break? While there is still a recuperation period, the three to five days is still relatively low compare to plastic surgery.

Risks

It seems like the threading procedure may be the answer for a great face lift since there are so many benefits. With all of these benefits, are there any risks? As the doctor is making small incisions into areas of the hairline or temples, there is risk for infection.

This risk is minimized as long as the doctor is careful and is aware of what he is doing. Infection risks can also be minimized when the patient takes care to follow all after care directions if any are given.

Patients may also have bruises and a feeling of soreness. This may last for approximately a week. Some patients have even stated that they can feel the actual thread underneath the skin.

Patients should have realistic expectations and discuss all the options with their doctor before undergoing any procedure.

A dermatologist can also perform endoscopic brow lifts if you want a younger look in the face.

Two types of brow lifts may be performed — conventional-incision method and the endoscopic method. With the conventional-incision method, one incision is made, which reaches from one ear to the other ear across the forehead. Before the procedure is done, the hair is tied back and may even be cut near the spot where the incision will be made.

After the incision is made, the forehead is lifted and the excess skin is taken out and the muscles are either relocated or removed completely. Additional skin may be cut and the area will be stitched after the eyebrows are raised. The area is bandaged and the bandages are kept on for approximately two days. The stitches are usually removed within two weeks.

After the procedure the patient may have or feel:

Discomfort which is temporary and can be relived with medication

Bruising

Headache

Numbing and/or tingling

Swelling

Hair Loss

A dermatologist can also perform endoscopic brow lifts if you want a younger look in the face. The brow lift is used to reverse signs of aging in the forehead as well as the brow area. Lines between the nose and eyebrows can also be decreased during this procedure.

The procedure requires a surgical scope to make openings near the temples of the head. These slits are made near or in the hairline or in the fold of the upper eyelids. The muscles which cause the sagging of the eyelids are then eliminated or relocated to help decrease the sagging of the brow.

The endosopic eye brow lift requires little cutting and is the least invasive surgery for eye brow lifts. This is why this procedure leaves little scarring and bruising. And is no need for anesthesia during the endoscopic brow lift.

After the procedure the patient may have or feel:

Discomfort which is temporary and can be relived with medication

Bruising

Numbing and/or tingling

Swelling

Who is the Best Candidate for a Brow Lift?

The best candidates for a brow lift are the ones looking to improve their appearance. The eyebrows may have a sagging look either because of aging or even because of an inherited brow. Some people are born with eyebrows which naturally sag. These individuals look to lift the brows and decrease the surplus of skin which hangs on the eyelid.

Some patients are not only getting eyebrow lifts to reverse the signs of aging. Patients looking for brow lifts may also be looking to fix the symmetry of their brows as well as alter the shape of their eyebrows.

Many brow lift patients fall within the 40 to 70 year age range. Some candidates who are younger are looking for an easy solution to help their premature aging or their genetic eyebrows. The best candidates are healthy not only physically but also mentally and emotionally.

Benefits

The main reason why individuals consider a brow lift is to obviously lift their eyebrows. The brow lift will elevate your eyebrows but there are also other benefits. These benefits may include:

Decrease in wrinkles between eyebrows above nose area

Decrease in wrinkles and lines within forehead area

Improve proportion of eyebrows

The overall benefit is that your face regains a more youthful appearance. The appearance of your face also goes from sad or angry to happy and cheerful…at least when you are smiling! After your eyebrows are lifted, you will gain a new sense of self-esteem as you will feel much better about how you look.

Risks

As with any medical procedure, some risks may or may not come along with the surgery. These risks may include:

Infection of the stitched area

Inability to move the eyebrows or the forehead (this can be corrected with an additional procedure)

Permanent scars

Permanent hair loss

Permanent loss of feeling in the stitched area

Excessive bleeding

It has been noted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery that patients who undergo endoscopic lift experience less complications than conventional-incision patients with occurrence of fewer than one percent.

Also, additional surgeries or procedures may be needed depending on the results wanted by the patient. These surgeries or procedures may include neck lift, face lift, chemical peels or eyelid surgery.

As with any medical procedure it is best to consult your physician to understand all of the risks and benefits. Your medical doctor can also determine if you are among a better candidate for the brow lift procedure.

The benefits of seeking psoriasis treatment is the reduction of psoriasis symptoms.

Psoriasis can be a real pain in…well, all over! The scaly patches which have taken over your body can make you feel less than beautiful or handsome. Sometimes they are red or flaky or even itchy.

The skin is the biggest organ of the body and it is the first thing someone notices about you. Psoriasis affects various parts of the body and is not contained to just one area. There are also many types including:

Plaque Psoriasis

Nail Psoriasis

Scalp Psoriasis

Guttate Psoriasis

Inverse Psoriasis

Pustular Psoriasis

Erythrodermic Psoriasis

There is the possibility of treating the psoriasis so that you can regain confidence in yourself and your skin. While many treatments are readily available either over the counter or by prescription, how can we know which one will be the most effective?

What is Psoriasis Treatment?

There are three categories of psoriasis treatments which include topical, light therapy, and oral medications. All three categories have the same results:

Stop the overproduction of skin cells which increase plaque and inflamed skin

Smooth roughened skin and decrease scales on skin

Topical medicines come in cream or ointment form and ease mild to less moderate kinds of psoriasis. When the autoimmune skin disease is on the more severe side, the topical creams and ointments can be used simultaneously with oral medications. Topical Creams and ointments include:

Topical corticosteroids: Help decrease inflammation in the skin as well as decreases skin cell production which causes irritation and itching. Strength of the corticosteroids depends on the severity of the psoriasis as well as the location o the body. For instance, a lower dosage may be used on the face area while a higher dosage may be used on the arms or legs.

Vitamin D analogues: A cream or ointment containing Vitamin D to help decrease skin cell growth. Works well alongside other creams and phototherapy. Individuals with skin disease are said to have a deficiency in vitamin D; this is where the treatment has been derived from.

Anthralin: A cream-based medication which is used, then washed off as it stains the skin. Used to help rid the skin of scales and smooth skin over. Can help balance skin cell production.

Topical retinoids: May help decrease inflamed skin and balance skin cell production. Has been used for treating acne but has recently been shown to help psoriasis, as stated by Mayo Clinic.

Salicylic acid: Comes either over the counter or by prescription. Helps relieve the skin of dead skin cells and to smoothen out rough skin. Should not be used over long periods of time. Can also be used in shampoo form for the scalp.

Coal tar: Exactly how it sounds, it is a thick black substance that comes from manufacturers of petroleum and coal. It is the oldest known effective product used for treating psoriasis.

Light therapy or phototherapy is used to help stop skin cells from developing thus allowing for decrease in scales and itchy skin. Types of light therapy include natural sunlight, UVB phototherapy, Narrowband UVB therapy, Photochemotherapy, and Excimer Laser Therapy. All of these therapies use some sort of form of ultraviolet light waves to help decrease the psoriasis symptoms.

Oral medications can also be taken to help relieve the individual of psoriasis. These medications include Retinoids, Methotrexate, Cyclosporine, Hydroxyurea, and Immunomodulator. The oral medications are usually used with more severe cases of psoriasis and are normally not taken for long periods of time. They are also used alongside other treatments such as topicals.

Who Are The Best Candidates For Psoriasis Treatment?

The Journal of American Academy Dermatology issued guidelines in 2009 for topical treatments of psoriasis. The guidelines show that almost 80% of the patients being treated for psoriasis have less than 10% of their body being affected by the disease. This makes them good candidates for topical therapies.

The topical creams are highly effective as well as safe. Depending on your severity, length of use will vary as well as if additional treatments are necessary. If you are nursing or pregnant, consult your physician before attempting topical medications as well as if they are going to add in supplemental treatments such as light therapy. If you have a moderate to severe case of psoriasis, topical creams should not be used alone and should include additional therapies.

If you are considering light therapy or oral medications in addition to the topical treatments, consult with your physician to ensure you are the right candidate. If you are nursing, pregnant, or looking to conceive, you should not take oral medications for psoriasis as it can cause birth defects. Again consult with your physician in order to obtain up-to-date information on all medications.

Benefits

The benefits of seeking psoriasis treatment is the reduction of psoriasis symptoms.
These symptoms include:

Scaly skin

Itchy skin

Red, flaky skin

Overproduction of skin cells

The most important benefit would be the higher self-esteem you feel once your skin condition is under control. The patient would be mentally, physically, and emotionally better.

Risks

Overuse of topical medications can cause the skin to thin out. Depending on the severity of the psoriasis and the medicine used, lengths of use will vary. Photo therapy or light therapies have the risk of the patient getting sunburned. Patients undergoing this kind of therapy usually have to visit the medical office three times a week and will have a higher risk of getting skin cancer.

Oral medication are used for more sever cases of psoriasis and carry several risks. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, oral medications should not be used by nursing patients, pregnant patients, or patients in childbearing years. Certain medications can cause risks including:

Methotrexate: nausea, fatigue, inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth, anorexia, white blood cell and platelet deficiency, liver damage and lung scarring. This oral medication can also cause birth defects as well as miscarriage.

Cyclosporine: glomerulosclerosis and scarring of the kidney’s blood vessels.

Acitretin: alopecia, nausea and abdominal pain, joint and muscle pain, and can cause birth defects.

When attaining psoriasis therapies, you should be closely watched by your physician. If any side effects seem to be occurring, seek medical attention immediately. As always, consult with your medical doctor before proceeding with any treatment.

Just remember while it is a long lasting solution…it is only a temporary longer lasting solution apposed to the shorter hair removal solutions." width="350" height="308" />

Being of Italian descent and having dark hair, it is no wonder why actress Alyssa Milano would undergo laser hair removal. Being a female in the limelight you have to be at your best. Milano actually told Esquire magazine in 2006 that it was the worst pain in the world and she much rather have tattoo removal. Yet, being a female celebrity and having to be at her best meant no mustache or beard…so she continued the removal process. Other female celebrities who have looked to laser hair removal include all of the Kardashian sisters. Kim, Klhoe, and Kourtney Kardashian were all shown on their E! reality show, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” visiting an American Laser Center in spring 2008.

And females are not the only ones going for laser hair removal these days. Christopher Knight, formerly of the “Brady Bunch,” removed hair around the ears, neck and cleaned up the eyebrows as well. Knight was shown on the hit series “Dr. 90210″ in 2007 getting his hair removed, even in his nose!

All the celebrities are doing it, what about us average people? Is it just for the rich? While it can run you a good amount of money, it has fantastic results and is affordable compared to other cosmetic procedures. If you are looking to get rid of those nasty stray hairs on the neck or perhaps the peach fuzz on your face, laser hair removal may be for you.

What Laser Hair Removal Entails:

A plastic surgeon can perform the laser hair removal procedure. This procedure involves a pulsating light beam which helps to remove the hair. The light beam aims for the pigment found in hair or what is known as melanin. The heat from the light hits the hair follicle and slows down the growth of hair.

It needs to be done several times so that the individual is hair free for a longer period of time. The person will never be hair-free forever but it will last several months. The permanent laser hair removal procedure is not common.

The laser procedure is not painful but can be uncomfortable. It seems uncomfortable because hair follicles have nerves located near them. When the light is pulsating the follicle, it is also pulsating and irritating the nerve endings. Depending on the length of the procedure and the client, anesthetic cream is readily available. The cream is rubbed on the area approximately one hour before the procedure.

Who Should Go for Laser Hair Removal?

Practically anyone can get their hair removed by the laser hair procedure. Best results are shown with patients of lighter skin complexions. For those with darker skin complexions, a longer light beam is used to kill the hair follicle.

Some conditions which may make the patient a less likely candidate for laser hair removal includes:

A client with dermatitis, eczema, or psoriasis. The hair removal may cause additional lesions on the skin.

A client with an active bacterial or viral infection.

A history of keloids or hypertrophic scarring

Clients with tans may not get the most effective hair removal and may actually result in scarring.

Clients who have taken Accutane are recommended to wait at least one year until undergoing laser hair removal. Scars have actually been linked to this drug and laser hair removal when used together.

As with any medical procedure, consult with you physician and plastic surgeon before undergoing the laser hair removal surgery. This will help you weigh your options.

What are the Benefits of Laser Hair Removal?

The biggest benefit is the actual removal of unwanted hair. By removing the hair with the lasers, there is now no need to shave, wax, or use bleaches. This means no bumps, ingrown hairs, stubble, peach fuzz, or itchy skin.

After a procedure, the client is recommended to return for another procedure every four to 12 weeks or as needed. This allows for a longer lasting hair-free neck, face, arms, or any other body part you may have the procedure done on.

Along with the hair removal comes a higher level of self-esteem and a better feeling of oneself. Imagine how you would feel being covered in unsightly hair? Being a female, especially hurts one’s self-esteem if they have unwanted hair growth.

To figure out if you a good candidate for chemical peeling and which type of peeling may be right for you, consult with your doctor.

These days everyone is looking for ways to renew their skin and get back to a younger appearance. Thousands to millions of dollars are spent each year on makeovers, surgeries, specialized facials, and even facial creams in order to get a younger look.

People are looking for ways to decrease the years which can be seen in their face. “Years” can be defined as wrinkles, acne scars, or even sun damage. The aged skin comes with time and no one can really avoid looking somewhere near their age or at worse much older than their real age.

Chemical peels have been around since the ancient Greeks and ancient Egyptians and is actually considered to be one of the oldest cosmetic practices in the world. The popularity of this procedure has grown not only because of it’s effectiveness but because of its almost instantaneous results.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel, also known as chemexfoliation or derma-peeling, is exactly how it sounds. Chemicals are placed onto the face to help peel off layers of skin. These layers of skin usually are old, have scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage. Underneath the older layers of skin, lay new layers of more youthful looking skin.

The chemicals placed onto the skin cause the skin to blister. The blistered skin then peels off leaving the new skin to be exposed. The chemical peel does not have to be used only for facial treatments. They can also be used to help regenerate new skin on the neck and hands.

Before a chemical peel the dermatologist may ask you to prepare your skin for the procedure. You may be asked to stop using specific medications and may also be asked to prepare the skin with Retin-A, Renova, or glycolic acid.

During the procedure, the dermatologist will first clean the skin using a cleansing agent then areas are covered such as the eyes and the hair. The chemicals used may include:

glycolic acid

trichloroacetic acid

salicylic acid

lactic acid

carbolic acid (phenol)

The client may feel hot to warm feelings around the area being “peeled”. This feeling may last around 10 minutes and will turn to a stinging feeling. Areas should be compressed with cool cloths afterwards to relive the stinging.

The three types of peels used are superficial, medium, and deep. The dermatologist will consult with the client to figure out which type of peel she needs based on the amount of damage to the skin. Depending on the type of peel, results will vary.

Normal Results are as follows:

Superficial Peel: Also known as the lunchtime peel can cause redness along with approximately five days of scaling.

Medium and Deep Peel: Deep blistering will occur and brown crusty patches may materialize as the new skin will not appear for several weeks.

Bandages may need to be placed over the peeled areas as well as antibiotics may need to be prescribed so that infection does not occur.

The Best Candidates:

The best candidates for chemical peels will include lighter skin clients as they are shown to have better results. This is a case by case basis so darker skin clients can consult with their dermatologist to see if they will be a good candidate.

Individuals who are usually not recommended for chemical peels include:

People who have skin which scar or discolor easily

People who have had specific cosmetic procedures done

People who have taken isotretinoin within the past six months

As always, consultation with the dermatologist as well as the client’s doctor is recommended to ensure that chemical peeling will be beneficial for the client.

What are the Benefits:

The major benefit of peeling is the feeling of being young again. Who doesn’t want to have the natural, youthful glow from 20 years ago? Clients looking to chemical peels to rejuvenate their skin often look for these beneficial results:

Diminish wrinkles

Diminish scars

Decrease sun damage (sun spots)

Overall healthy glow of new skin

Smoothing roughness on skin

While there are benefits, there are also results which the chemical peel cannot guarantee. Chemical peels cannot tighten loose or sagging skin, cannot fix deep scars, pore size will not decrease, and veins will not decrease.

Benefits and Risks of Removing Veins

Blue lines along the legs are more common than we think. With 15 percent of men and 25 percent of women suffering from varicose veins, it’s no wonder many want they removed. The prominent blue veins make individuals feel less than perfect and more insecure about their looks.

Varicose veins are not only a cosmetic concern though. Along with the protruding veins come aches and pains in the legs. Pressure buildups in the legs and within time if not treated, they can cause other problems within the circulatory system.

More often than not there are several risk factors which will put an individual in a higher percentage for varicose veins. If you have a job which requires you stand on your legs for a long time such as a waitress, you may be at a higher risk. If you are overweight or obese, this can put extra pressure on your legs leaving you susceptible for varicose veins. Women are at a greater risk to develop varicose veins as well as older adults and those who have family members with varicose veins.

So what can be done to reverse the process of varicose veins? While tight stockings and alterations of lifestyle may help to an extent, this will not remove the veins. A Dermatologist, however, can remove the varicose veins allowing for a reversal process.

What is Vein Removal?

Before beginning the process of vein removal, your physician will have to examine you to ensure you are a good candidate for this procedure. Some assessments may include an ultrasound of the legs to ensure there are no blood clots and evaluation to see if any ulcers have developed near the ankles.

Two types of removal methods of veins offered by dermatologists include sclerotherapy or laser therapy. Sometimes, depending on the client, the dermatologist will remove the veins with both the sclerotherapy and laser therapy.

Sclerotherapy involves small needles and injections of solution which will help make the veins fade away. While needles are used, this is a non-surgical procedure for the removal of veins. Clients may feel a slight stinging or pinching, but anesthesia is not needed and discomfort is negligible. This method takes approximately a half an hour and depending on the severity of the veins clients will have need to repeat the process several times. For milder cases, patients will see the dermatologist one to two times. For more several cases, the client will continue treatments on a monthly basis until all veins are faded.

Laser removal involves a laser or beam of light which throbs against the vein to help it fade away. This method is used alone for smaller veins or in addition to sclerotherapy. The lasers heat the veins which allow the veins to disband. The heat causes the blood to clot and allows for the disappearance of veins.

Best Candidates for Vein Removal?

Laser therapy is best for individuals with minor veins, or what is known as spider veins. It is preferred that the client is in good physical health and does not smoke. It is also recommended that the best candidate be in good psychological health. Individuals who have the tendency to get keloid scars are not the best candidates. Keloid scars are scars which happen after surgery and grow beyond the surgery point.

Sclerotherapy is also for candidates in the best possible health. Candidates who should not go for sclerotherapy include:

Clients with blood-borne disease

Clients with infectious disease

Clients with cardiac disease

Clients with high blood pressure

Clients with diabetes

Clients who are pregnant

Clients who are nursing

Candidates should consult with their physician to come up with a plan for vein removal.

Are you squinting to read this? Wishing that you had 20/20 vision again? For people with impaired vision it seems to be that there are two options for correcting and improving the vision. These options include eyeglasses or contact lenses. Both of these options though, seem to get in the way of our daily routines.

Eyeglasses can only be described as a burden for your face to carry. Many people run out of the house forgetting their eye glasses at home, hence not being able to see for the rest of the day. Other people put their glasses down and are constantly forgetting where they misplaced the eyeglasses. When you wear eyeglasses it has to become like a second skin for you. In order to see and be able to continue on with your day effectively, you must always have those eyeglasses on your face.

For people who do not want to worry about misplacing eyeglasses or maybe do not even like the way they look in glasses, they can opt for contacts. Contacts carry their own baggage as well. Contacts need to be sterilized before being placed in your eyes. They need to be handled delicately and they can be misplaced as well. Haven’t we all heard the line, “I dropped a contact.” Contacts are definitely not for those who can’t stand being poked in the eye…imagine doing that several times a day?

Then there are those people who consider buying glasses and contacts. They wear glasses one day and contacts the next. They figure they have the best of both worlds. Is there a third option to improved or maybe even perfect vision? Laser eye surgery has been taking the world by storm and has not only been by celebrities but by everyday people as well.

What Does Laser Eye Surgery Entail?

Laser eye surgery is exactly what is sounds like…surgery. Laser eye surgery has helped many people to improve their vision and even gain 20/20 vision back. During laser eye surgery the cornea is reshaped so that the focusing power is altered. The cornea is the clear part of the eye, like a transparent film, which covers the front of the eye. The cornea is responsible for 2/3 of the focusing power in the eye.

There are two major laser eye surgery procedures which can be done to reshape the cornea including:

Lasik Eye Surgery: Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis entails cutting then folding over a thin flap of the eye, in order to reach and reshape the cornea with the help of a laser.

PRK: PhotoRefractive Keratectomy entails scraping away the outer layer of the cornea and then the reshaping of the cornea.

The surgery takes approximately half an hour, with 10 to 15 minutes spent on each eye. The doctor may prescribe painkillers or medication to help ease the pain. While your vision will be fuzzy the first day, it should be as good as new the following day.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Laser Eye Surgery?

To be a good candidate for laser eye surgery you must meet requirements which include:

18 years of age or older

Shows no signs of refraction in the past year

Doctor must determine if you are medically healthy-some factors which may deem you medically unfit would be glaucoma, diabetes, herpes of the eye, or cataracts

Doctor must determine if the Laser Eye Surgery will help meet your vision needs

You want to be free of the hassle of eyeglasses and/ or contacts

You have realistic expectations regarding the surgery

This is a just a general overview of what may be required for candidates. Individuals considering the laser eye surgery should determine with their physician if they are good candidates.

What Are The Benefits?

The most obvious benefit would be vision improvement. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) stated that seven out of ten patients who undergo Laser Eye Surgery have 20/20 vision results. Although, they also have stated that 20/20 vision does not always mean perfect vision.

Patients who achieve 20/20 visions may not have to carry around those bothersome eyeglasses anymore nor would they have to soak their contacts in solution. New vision would mean a new lifestyle as well. Imagine driving without having to switch from sunglasses to eyeglasses? Some more adventurous opportunities can include sky diving, horseback riding and bungee jumping. Who really wants their eyeglasses to fall from their face as they are trying to enjoy the fall from the sky?

Laser Eye Surgery helps to improve self-esteem of many people. People who feel their faces are hidden behind glasses feel a new sense of confidence as they can show off their “new beauty.”

Are There Any Risks?

As with any surgery, risks are involved. FDA has stated that complications have occurred with 1% to 5% of individuals who have had Laser Eye Surgery. These complications included:

Infections

Flap Wrinkles

Central Corneal Islands

Epithelial Ingrowths

Corneal Ecstasia

Astigmatism

Diffuse Lamellar Keratitis (DLK)

Vision may actually be lost instead of gained

Above all, Laser Eye Surgery is for those who are willing to take a risk in order to stray away from their everyday eyeglasses and contacts. However, if your current visual situation is not so bothersome, then perhaps the surgery is really not worth the risk.
