Best Candidates for a Nose Job

Not everyone who has a nose job comes away with the perfect nose they desire. Dr. Thomas Liszka runs Ballantyne Plastic Surgery in Charlotte, North Carolina, and talks here about why in about 10% to 15% of cases people who have nose jobs walk away dissatisfied with the result.

A rhinoplasty can reshape the nose and allow better facial harmony by reducing a nasal hump, augment a depression at the bridge of the nose, refine or lift the tip, make a broad nose more narrow, straighten a crooked nose, or narrow nostril width if the base of the nostrils are too wide.

At Ballantyne Plastic Surgery, we correct these issues to whatever degree you desire to allow you to achieve a natural-looking result and maintain your appearance. And the best candidate for any kind of plastic surgery, including a nose job, is someone who has realistic expectations.

Saying that, the best candidate for a nose job – meaning the person who will have the best results – is someone who has a dorsal hump and wants it straightened. More difficult nose jobs are those that deal with the nasal tip. Patients with thinner skin on the tip have better results, as it shows the architecture of the cartilage better.

People who have thick nasal tip skin, usually those of Mediterranean or African origin, tend to have less ability to have high definition of the tip. We also sometimes augment the nose, actually adding volume to it. That happens less often, perhaps with a patient of Asian descent who has a flatter bridge to the nose, for example.

Realistic Expectations

One thing unusually about rhinoplasty, unlike any other type of plastic surgery, is that the risk of not getting it how the patient wants is 10% to 15%, due to the nature of the cartilage and bone sin the nose. You can sometimes make it better but that will involve a re-operation.

Again, that’s where the most important thing is to have good expectations. You have to be careful if the surgeon tells you that you cannot do what you ask him or her to do. If you don’t listen, you will have problems after the surgery.

Final Results Can Take a Year

Rhinoplasty requires a 7- to 10-day recovery period and no exercise for a minimum of two weeks. Swelling on the tip can take up to a year to go away and allow you to see the final results. It’s all  subtle but it can take about a year nonetheless. Rhinoplasty also can be performed with septal surgery for breathing difficulties or with other facial cosmetic procedures.
