A majority of American men will deal with some degree of hair loss as they age.

A majority of American men will deal with some degree of hair loss as they age. Bakersfield hair surgery specialist Kenneth Siporin, MD, explains that while non-surgical treatments for hair loss are available, they all have their limitations. At Beautologie in Bakersfield, hair surgery offers a permanent, natural-looking solution to hair loss.

Here, Dr. Siporin explains your options for treating hair loss and how to determine whether hair transplant surgery is right for you.

Treatments for Hair Loss

If you’re concerned about thinning hair, there are some non-surgical ways to slow or temporarily stop your hair loss. Originally created to treat high blood pressure, a topical medication called Rogaine can be used to temporarily halt hair loss. In some individuals, it can even promote hair re-growth. While Rogaine can be quite effective, it must be used continuously. When the medication is discontinued, any hair that the medication has been preserving will be lost.

Propecia (a pill that is taken daily) can also help some patients re-grow hair at the crown and improve hair thickness. Like Rogaine, Propecia must be taken continuously in order to maintain your results. And like all medications, Rogaine and Propecia have been associated with side effects that should be discussed with your physician.

Hair Transplantation

Unlike medications, hair transplant surgery offers a permanent solution to hair loss. This procedure involves harvesting hair from a donor area (usually the back of the head) and transplanting it to those areas where noticeable thinning has occurred. Thanks to advanced techniques, today’s hair transplant surgery offers excellent, natural-looking results with minimal discomfort and downtime.

Are You a Good Candidate?

In general, the best candidates for hair transplant surgery are healthy individuals with enough hair in the donor area(s) to harvest for transplantation. But the best way to determine whether hair transplantation is right with you is to meet with a doctor, says Dr. Siporin.

“It’s important to have a conversation about a patient’s goals and to help him understand the kind of results he can expect. Whether someone is a good candidate is all about matching a patient’s expectations with what is achievable for him.”

At Beautologie in Bakersfield, hair surgery begins with a consultation. During this meeting, Dr. Siporin takes the time to listen to your goals and concerns, answer your questions, and walk you step by step through the procedure, from surgery to recovery and beyond. If you’re ready to regain your youthful hairline and the confidence that comes with it, hair surgery at Bakersfield’s Beautologie may be the answer.

By the age of 35, approximately two out of every three American men will experience some degree of hair loss.

By the age of 35, approximately two out of every three American men will experience some degree of hair loss. And by the age of 50, about 85 percent of men will have experienced significant thinning. Bakersfield laser hair transplant specialist Kenneth Siporin, MD, explains that while there may be some things you can do to temporarily slow hair loss, even popular FDA-approved medications like Propecia and Rogaine have their limitations. At Beautologie in Bakersfield, laser hair transplant surgery offers a permanent solution to hair loss.

Traditional Hair Transplantation vs. Follicular Unit Extraction

There are two primary types of hair replacement surgery – a procedure commonly referred to as the “strip method” and a newer procedure called follicular unit extraction (FUE).

For years, hair transplantation has been performed using hair from a strip of skin that is removed from back of the patient’s head (the “donor” area). While this procedure produces good results, it results in a linear scar across the back of the head, which is visible when the head is shaved or the hair cut very short.

FUE, Dr. Siporin explains, represents a breakthrough in hair transplantation. FUE is performed using a small round instrument to remove hair follicles one at a time. FUE can be used to harvest the same amount of hair as can be harvested via a strip procedure, but leaves behind no visible scar. While FUE is more time-consuming than strip-method hair transplant surgery, it provides excellent results and allows patients to wear their hair as they wish – even very short – without worrying about telltale scarring.

The disadvantages of FUE are relatively short-term. In order to harvest hair from the donor area, the surgeon must first shave that area of the head. This means that after the procedure, the patient will likely want to shave the rest of his hair or will have to contend for a while with uneven hair lengths. Overall, however, recovery from FUE is much easier than from a strip method procedure. There are no stitches to remove and no incisions to become infected, so patients are more comfortable and able to return to normal activities more quickly.

Hair loss can have devastating effects on your self-esteem.

Hair loss can have devastating effects on your self-esteem. But according to Bakersfield hair transplant specialist Kenneth Siporin, MD, of Beautologie, help is available. For Dr. Siporin’s patients in Bakersfield, hair transplants offer the opportunity to regain a more youthful look and the confidence that comes with it. Here, Dr. Siporin offers advice for choosing a hair replacement specialist for your procedure.

Technical Skill

Perhaps your most important consideration when choosing a hair replacement specialist should be the doctor’s technical skill. Like any surgery, a hair transplant requires a certain amount of manual dexterity, in-depth understanding of anatomy, and extensive knowledge related to the procedure itself. This type of skill can only be developed through training and experience.

Ethical Integrity

As important as technical skill is, it’s not the only factor you should consider when choosing a hair replacement surgeon. Hair replacement is a highly competitive field, Dr. Siporin explains, and requires a fair amount of trust on the part of the patient.

“The patient must be able to trust not only that the surgeon will perform the surgery well, but also that the surgeon is going to follow the plan that you’ve agreed upon, be diligent in his work, and conduct himself according to high ethical standards. Equally important is that the surgeon has a staff that is dedicated to the success of your surgery.”

Compassion

Because one enters into hair transplant surgery with certain fears and expectations, it’s important to choose a surgeon who will treat you with respect and compassion. Do you feel as though the surgeon is really listening to your concerns? Have you had the opportunity to ask questions? Has the surgeon explained the process in detail? And do you have a clear understanding of the results you can expect? You should feel as though your surgeon is willing to partner with you to achieve the results you’re looking for, from your first consultation through your procedure and follow-up visits.

“You can get a good sense of how caring and compassionate the doctor will be during your consultation,” says Dr. Siporin. “Some patients won’t even see the doctor – they’ll see a consultant or a patient advisor. That may or may not be helpful in choosing a surgeon, but it’s not the way I prefer to do things.”

Hair Transplants in Bakersfield

Wih over 12 years of experience, more than 3000 cases and an uncompromising commitment to achieving the best possible results for his patients, Dr. Siporin is Bakersfield’s hair transplant expert.

In order to maximize the results of your surgery, Dr. Siporin believes that open communication is key. Before you begin your procedure, Dr. Siporin and his staff will walk you step by step through the process – from surgery to recovery and beyond. And Dr. Siporin’s meticulous attention to detail ensures that you get the natural results you are looking for.

Feeling as though you’re not the man you used to be? Testosterone therapy may be the answer.

Feeling as though you’re not the man you used to be? Testosterone therapy may be the answer, says Phoenix hormone therapy expert Barry Berger, MD. At Dr. Berger’s Phoenix hormone therapy and weight loss center, patients experience renewed vitality, improved health and a better quality of life through the replacement of this essential male hormone.

Signs of Testosterone Deficiency

Often, individuals suffering from testosterone deficiency don’t even realize they have a medical problem, just that they aren’t feeling like “themselves” anymore. They may be tired, less interested in sex, feel less attractive, or simply feel as though they’ve lost the virility they had when they were younger.

Male and female sex hormones are quite complex, Dr. Berger explains, and they can change over time. Male sex hormones include a small amount of estrogen along with testosterone. Likewise, female sex hormones include a small amount of testosterone along with estrogen and progesterone. When these hormones are not properly balanced and not enough testosterone is present, a number of troubling health, cosmetic and psychological problems can arise.

Signs of testosterone deficiency include:

A decrease in muscle mass along with an increase in body fat

Unusual fatigue

A decrease in hemoglobin and mild anemia

Osteoporosis (loss of bone density)

The loss of body hair

Negative changes in cholesterol and lipid levels

The loss of sex drive

Erectile dysfunction

A decreased sense of well being and trouble concentrating

Because testosterone is their primary sex hormone, men are most likely to experience problems related to a deficiency. But women can be deficient in progesterone as well. In women, testosterone deficiency most often manifests as depression, lack of energy or lack of focus. At Dr. Berger’s Phoenix hormone therapy center, both men and women can be treated for testosterone deficiency.

What Causes Testosterone Deficiency?

Men naturally begin losing testosterone in their mid-30s. But in recent years, that testosterone loss seems to have gotten more dramatic for reasons that are not entirely clear. A study comparing average testosterone losses in 1940 to those losses among men in the same age group in 1990 revealed that men today are losing far more testosterone than they would have 50 years ago.

“Although we don’t know exactly what it is, something has gotten into our environment that is affecting these losses,” Dr. Berger explains. “Maybe it’s chemicals in our foods, the chemicals in our cleaning products or other environmental factors. But more men need extra testosterone now than they did years ago.”

Getting the Help You Need

Once you understand that a hormone imbalance may be to blame for your lost sense of youth and vitality, improving the way you look and feel may be as simple as restoring balance with testosterone therapy. Offering safe, effective, personalized male hormone therapy in Phoenix, Dr. Berger’s expert team can help to restore the confidence and virility you thought was gone forever.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Skin care isn’t just for women anymore. Thanks to the convenience and affordability of medical spas as compared to high-priced dermatologists and plastic surgeons, men are increasingly taking advantage of new technologies to reshape their bodies and counteract the effects of aging. So which anti-aging procedures are best for men? And is an anti-aging protocol right for you?

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, says Jannae Nichols of the Jannae Beauty Institute. Nichols, whose spa offers body contouring and an exciting, one-of-a-kind non-surgical facelift in Newport Beach, California, says that any treatment designed shave years off the face or body can be used on clients of either gender.

The “Mansformation”

As more and more men are turning to day spas to look and feel younger, the Jannae Beauty Institute has created a completely unique, three-week program designed to help male clients reduce unwanted fat, improve the appearance of their skin, and boost overall wellness. Like all of Nichols’ treatment programs, this protocol (called the Total J Transformation for Men) utilizes the industry’s most advanced non-surgical, non-invasive treatment options, combined with an innovative approach centered around treating the whole being rather than simply achieving physical changes.

The Total J Transformation, Nichols says, involves body contouring, a non-surgical facelift, and a wellness check-up with one of Southern California’s most respected chiropractic kinesiologists. It includes nine targeted fat reduction sessions using the groundbreaking Zerona laser combined with Endermologie cellulite treatment. This approach not only reduces the circumference of treated areas but also tightens the skin while reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Also included is the Jannae Beauty Institute non-surgical facelift, recently featured on “Good Day LA” and touted as one of the most exciting alternatives to cosmetic surgery available in the Los Angeles area. This protocol combines three state-of-the-art technologies – LumiLift, LumiPhoto, and Cosmecanique – to firm, tighten, and reduce wrinkles on the face and neck.

Another important element of Nichols’ “mansformation” package is a visit to a chiropractic kinesiologist. According to Nichols, understanding endocrine, metabolic, digestive and fat storage issues is essential in achieving the total body transformation her clients are looking for.

Is It Right for You?

Men seek help from day spas for a number of reasons. Many have turned to anti-aging treatments as a way to compete in an increasingly tough job market. Others simply want to look and feel like they did when they were younger. “For example, we often see clients whose wives have just had babies, but the husbands have gained 20 pounds,” she says. “Men want the same type of results women want – to look and feel their best no matter what their ages or family situations.”

According to Nichols, the best candidates for Jannae Beauty Institute’s anti-aging protocols are those clients who are ready to become engaged, active participants in their own transformations. “We don’t do plastic surgery here,” she says. “So patients who want a passive, quick fix aren’t going to be happy with our approach.” If you’re ready and willing to be present and to take action toward becoming your very best self, however, then the Total J Transformation for Men can help you achieve outstanding results.

Whereas women feel sudden hot flashes or severe mood swings, the transformation in men tends to be much more gradual.

For decades, both doctors and researchers have studied the transition that occurs in women when their ovaries stop producing eggs. Hot flashes, migraines, increased heart rates, fatigue, and irritability are synonymous with idea of menopause, and many women are looking for ways to combat these symptoms. While there are countless books, over-the-counter drugs, and medical treatments all devoted to menopause and the women going through it, little is spoken publicly about andropause. Until now, that is.

Simply put, explains Jonathan Williams MD of Radiance Anti-Aging and Body Sculpting, andropause is the alternative to menopause that occurs in men. Although this is certainly not a new condition—it was first documented in the 1940s—not a lot of focus has been placed on the changes that men experience during their mid-lives.

Andropause, says Dr. Williams, is caused by a drop in testosterone, but because men don’t know about it or don’t show clear signs, it can sometimes be harder to detect than menopause in women. Whereas women feel sudden hot flashes or severe mood swings, the transformation in men tends to be much more gradual.

Just because a person may not notice the changes taking place, however, does not mean that they aren’t happening. All men will experience andropause, explains Dr. Williams, because it is hormone-related. Common symptoms of andropause, he continues, start as early as age 30 and expand over the following decades. These include changes in mood, decreased agility, fatigue and loss of sex drive.

Luckily, at Radiance Anti-Aging and Body Sculpting, a med spa in Albany, GA, Dr. Williams is able to educate men on the processes they are going through and offer them real solutions. Many times, he says, if men do pick up on the symptoms, they think that their weight is to blame, so they visit Radiance Anti-Aging and Body Sculpting for consultations because they think they need Laser Lypo. It is during the consultation, however, that Dr. Williams is able to confirm what is really going on.

Nothing is left to chance though, and if Dr. Williams suspects that andropause may be to blame for the symptoms the patient has been feeling, he will order a series of lab tests to confirm a testosterone deficiency. Once the labs are studied and the patient’s symptoms are taken into consideration, the necessary hormone replacement therapy treatments can be prescribed. Afterward, Dr. Williams says, a lot of men are surprised at the positive changes they feel.

Because the condition is hormone-related, followup visits are often necessary. There are so many outside factors that can affect a man’s hormone levels, such as stress, that if a patient ever starts to feel some of the symptoms again, the hormone replacement therapy can be tweaked to meet his needs.

At first, says Dr. Williams, patients are asked to come in for checkups after three months, six months, and then just once a year. This is a lifestyle change, he adds, that can only be made with the help of this prescription because testosterone will not replenish itself.

If you haven’t been feeling like yourself lately, then it may be time to have your testosterone levels checked by a doctor. Studies show, says Dr. Williams, that andropause can put men at risk for heart disease and bone loss, so the sooner you correct the deficiency, the better you will feel on a whole.

Often, men seek alternative methods to lose weight and inches when they are unable to achieve the sleek, smooth and masculine bodies they dream about.

Lots of people seek traditional liposuction to get rid of what they perceive to be unsightly fat, a build-up of unwanted blobby bits that often cannot be gotten rid of regardless of diet or exercise. Of course, men and women store fat in their bodies differently, and each gender has its own problem areas. Men, for the most part, are predisposed to store fat in their abdomens more so than anywhere else. They also are often prone get what we call “love handles.”

Often, men seek alternative methods to lose weight and inches when they are unable to achieve the sleek, smooth and masculine bodies they dream about, regardless of their diet and/or exercise routines. Dr. Alexandra F. Lambrou is the medical director of Chicago’s Sculpt Medical Spa, and she offers clients who are seeking to sculpt their bodies a safe, painless and effective way to get rid of unwanted fat. Lipo-Ex is a great alternative to liposuction, as it not only targets unwanted fat deposits, but also diminishes the appearance of cellulite and speeds up collagen production, leaving tighter and firmer skin. This type of non-surgical lipoplasty will allow men to see reductions in their waistlines and better overall body contours without the scarring or risks associated with anesthesia that traditional liposuction entails.

Traditional lipo has other problems too. It can only treat the subcutaneous fat underneath the skin, while the visceral fat remains. It is this fat which can cause real health problems in men, according to Dr. Lambrou. “A lot of men who come to us have a real serious visceral fat problem, including a large pot belly, which comes from the visceral fat. We can certainly help reduce the pot belly.” She says that on average, her patients see anywhere from three inches to six inches of abdominal circumference reduction after finishing a course of Lipo-Ex treatments.

Men seek Lipo-Ex to reduce weight in areas besides the abdominal region, Dr. Lambrou adds. Often, men choose to use Lipo-Ex to reduce double chins. The treatment works well for this; it can also slim down the neck, take away fat from the back of the arms where the triceps are, and get rid of love handles. Although the clinic has had some requests to get rid of what is known as manboobs, or gynecomastia, that has not yet taken place, as researchers are still studying the effects of Lipo-Ex on vital organs in the chest cavity. The clinic has not done male thighs either, Dr. Lambrou adds, although this is a common procedure involving Lipo-Ex when it comes to women.

Many people – both men and women – are unaware of the fact that it’s possible to lose up to ten pounds of fat with Lipo-Ex following a course of treatments, making it a safe and effective alternative to surgery. The majority of Americans over the age of 30 are dissatisfied at least to some extent with the way they look, and fat is often the culprit. Lipo-Ex uses high frequency radio waves to target and then dissolve fat, making it possible for the body to eventually get rid of it naturally. Lipo-Ex is painless and can be a fantastic solution for men who want to look better – naturally.

Although there are always exceptions to the rule, men, compared to women, don’t tend to spend a lot of time dealing with matters of personal care. While it’s perfectly natural to prefer a quick and easy skin care routine, every man should use certain skin care essentials on a regular daily basis. Kim Dahle is a seasoned skin care consultant at Florida’s Natura Medspa & Laser Center, a full-service medical spa offering everything from laser hair removal to skin tightening to weight loss assistance, and according to her, any man remotely concerned about the way he looks needs to invest in the following:

Sunscreen
When it comes to sun-damaged skin, men tend to fall victim more so than their female counterparts. The reason for this is simple: Men don’t tend to use sunscreen as often as women do. Although some sunscreens might be scented in a way that emanates a bit of a feminine vibe, plenty of sunscreens are geared towards men. If your toiletry collection doesn’t currently include a sunscreen that you’re actually willing to use, then visit a local medical spa and ask a skin care consultant for a recommendation. This is especially important if you work outside or tend to spend a lot of time outdoors.

Cleanser
Although most men don’t experience hormonal fluctuations like women (which can often times be the source of unwanted breakouts), it’s still important that you get your hands on a good cleanser that will do its job without drying out your skin. In fact, you should ask a medical spa professional to recommend a cleanser that is effective yet gentle.

Shaving cream
Finding the right type of shaving cream can be easier said than done. Most men don’t realize that the beard area can actually be rather sensitive. If yours tends to break out or get irritated often, then you’ll need to find a gentle shaving cream. In fact, your best bet is to find a shaving cream that contains moisturizing properties to smooth out the skin and keep it looking healthy.

Remember, no rule says that skin care can’t be quick and simple. By equipping yourself with the proper essentials, you can do your part to make personal maintenance a snap.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is not only for women. More and more men are choosing to have procedures done, in some cases to give them an edge when it comes to business. Dr. Thomas Liszka of Ballantyne Plastic Surgery in Charlotte, North Carolina, talks here about why this is becoming more and more common.

The most common plastic surgery procedures for men are the upper and lower eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty. Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the upper eyelid to allow you to see more of the lid and your natural lid crease, and can result in a more refreshed, alert look. A lower lid blepharoplasty takes away lower lid puffiness and sometimes repositions the fat to diminish deep lines. Occasionally extra skin is removed as well to contour the lower eyelid.

Other procedures which men like to have include rhinoplasty, or a nose job, as well as a chin implant. The reason for this is to achieve overall facial symmetry, and also because a weak chin is often considered a sign of weakness overall in men. Less commonly, however, men come to us desiring a facelift. Most men who choose to have facelift surgery do so because they have a heavy or full neck, as well as jowls along the jaw line.

Harder to Conceal Scars

The reason men are less likely to undergo facelift is because during recovery time they are less likely to wear makeup. So, while both men and women will experience some obvious swelling and bruising for the first two weeks, women are lucky in that after that they will be able to conceal it with a good foundation.

Also, if you look at men and their beard growth, there is hairless area right in front of the ear, and in most cases, the beard starts a centimeter out from that. Most patients try to conceal the scar resulting from a facelift in that area. However, if you do that with men you pull the beard there. So the men will have a scar that is more visible for a while and will require a light beard to cover up.

Bit Of a Stigma

A little bit more of a stigma is attached to men having plastic surgery than women having deciding to undergo a cosmetic procedure. However, we are seeing more of a trend lately where men are becoming more interested in facial cosmetic surgery, not just from an appearance standpoint to make them look better, but because they want to appear more youthful to give them an increased edge in the workplace.

Men who come to us for plastic surgery tell me that people think younger people are more energetic, and are the most likely to interact with the target audience. So we see more men coming in for their career alone as their primary desire to have facial cosmetic surgery. Usually they are in sales, although this desire to have plastic surgery can span any career that is on the cutting edge of technology. They just say that having a more youthful appearance is usually more desirable for them, and can help them advance in their work.

Dr. Guljeet Sohal is the owner of Balle Bliss, a med spa based in her hometown of Cypress, Texas, that welcomes both men and women to enjoy a variety of treatments. Here she talks about why people of both genders should be made to feel comfortable about making the most of their appearance.

Men can enjoy the same treatments as women in a med spa. We have a lot of men who come in for BOTOX injections, for example, especially to get rid of the appearance of frown lines on their foreheads. We also have a lot of men who come in for dermal fillers, particularly their nasolabial folds.

Those are probably the two most popular things men have done at Balle Bliss med spa. However another popular treatment, which is becoming even more commonplace among men, is laser hair removal. Women have hair removal carried out usually on the face, legs, underarms and arms. It goes without saying that for men, the most popular area on the body is the back.

Reversing Sun Damage

We also men who come in with sun damage and have a FotoFacial or chemical peels. Both have the same goal in mind: to make the skin look younger and rejuvenated. A FotoFacial is a form of IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light treatment, that seeks to reverse sun damage using a special laser. Chemical peels rejuvenate skin by sloughing off dead skin cells to remove younger, fresher skin underneath.

At Balle Bliss, our motto is that if anything is bothering you, come in to our med spa and we can help. That applies to old people as well as younger ones, and men as well as women. In fact, we do have a significant number of male clients, our ratio is 10% men, 90% women.

Looking Good

Most of the men who come to Balle Bliss Med Spa are businessmen. They are usually in the business of selling something, so they have to look good. We have a lot of real estate agents and brokers come to our spa, people who are in sales who need to make a good impression. For professional as well as personal reasons, they need to look attractive, healthy and hopefully young.

What I hear from a lot of our male customers is that if they don’t look good, they lose their sales to a younger men. We try to help them as much as possible to make the most of what they have, in an atmosphere that is as comfortable and accommodating as possible.

Don’t Be Shy

Men should not be shy. They should come in and let us know what is bothering them, as we can help. We have no problem having men at our spa. Our manager is a man, and he does all he can to make both our male and female clients feel as comfortable and at ease as possible.

Often, however, the men who come to us are a tiny bit embarrassed. We have a lot make appointments and then they don’t show up. Some will come in for the consultation but they are not ready to have a procedure done because they think it’s only for women.

But once they do get it done they love it. And they come back again and again.
