If you’re considering plastic surgery, it is important to know that the surgeon you choose is well qualified to perform your surgery, and thus able to effectively achieve the results you are seeking.

If you’re considering plastic surgery, it is important to know that the surgeon you choose is well qualified to perform your surgery, and thus able to effectively achieve the results you are seeking. According to David Liland, M.D., not every cosmetic surgeon is equally qualified. In fact, according to the Dallas plastic surgeon, if a doctor has not been board certified there is a good chance that the doctor does not possess the necessary experience to perform cosmetic surgery that will have the results you are looking for.

It is important then to note when choosing a doctor for your cosmetic surgery that the individual has been given the title of plastic surgeon. In terms of considering a cosmetic surgery for yourself, it is essential to understand the different types of procedures a plastic surgeon in Dallas can provide. According to Dr. Liland, there are seven basic procedures of cosmetic surgery. These procedures include but are not limited to:

face lift

breast augmentation

liposuction

tummy tuck

breast lift

breast reduction

eye lift

Of these seven basic procedures, Dr. Liland states liposuction and breast augmentation are the two procedures plastic surgeons perform most frequently. When you’re considering a plastic surgeon in Dallas, you’ll first want to review evidence of his surgical skill. While this task may seem difficult to gauge, observing the doctor’s own before and after photos can be very helpful and insightful into the results you can expect to see in your own surgery. Another great option the plastic surgeon in Dallas recommends is interviewing a former patient that underwent the same cosmetic surgery you’re considering. Doing so, you will be able to have a basic idea of what your surgery will entail. These two approaches towards considering cosmetic surgery from a specific plastic surgeon can provide you with a knowledgeable overview of the doctor you are reviewing. You’ll find that Dr. Liland’s skill, compassion and personal approach make your entire consultation and surgical process a low-stress, enjoyable experience. If considering utilizing a plastic surgeon to correct an imperfection, slim down, look younger or simply feel more confident, contact Dr. Liland for a personal consultation.

Fuller lips are becoming more and more popular, while trout pouts are out. Making sure you get the full, luscious lips of your dreams requires the right dermal fillers as well as a skilled physician, says Dr. Guljeet Sohal, owner of Balle Bliss luxury med spa in Cypress, Texas.

Lip enhancement is a fairly straightforward non-surgical cosmetic procedure that has become more and more popular over the years. At Balle Bliss med spa, we use one of two dermal fillers, either Juvederm or Restylane.

Both of these fillers are derived from non-animal sources, made out of hyaluronic acid. I personally prefer Juvederm. Restylane has a small amount of crystals within it, some patients have told me they can feel the crystals in their lips. It’s a little bit grainier, and not so appealing for that reason. Also, I have much more experience using Juvederm to enhance lips.

Temporary Results

But keep in mind that both give only temporary results, and will require touch-ups to maintain the look. To keep your mouth looking good, you’ll have to come back regularly – Juvederm can last up to 12 months, while Restylane lasts from six to nine months.

I like to outline the border of the lips first, the upper and the lower lip. Then depending on the client’s preference I plump their lips up however big they want them. The usual rule of thumb, however, is that the top lip should be one third the size of the bottom one, so that the end result is one-third and two-thirds.

Size DOES Matter

Occasionally I get patients who want very big lips, which I believe would look out of proportion with the rest of their features and face. Sometimes I try to talk them out of it because I don’t want them to walk around looking silly. I also don’t want somebody saying, “Which doctor did she go to?”

But at the end of the day, I have to give them what they want, within parameters of safety, obviously, or else they will go somewhere else to get it. Most patients tell you they want you to do what you think is best. Others say no no no, just do it the way I say. I always try my best to make them look good, not silly.

When having a lip enhancement done, the main thing to remember is that as you age you lose volume in your lips, so putting back even a little bit of that volume will reduce your facial age by several years. When done right, it’s definitely worth it.

If your child has a cleft lip or cleft palate and you think surgery may be the best option of treatment, have your child assessed by a professional.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are two of the most common physical malformations in infants and young children. Although these conditions are not life threatening, the problems they cause often are distressing for parents. Plastic surgery can relieve both the problems caused by the malformation and the resultant distress.

What It Is

Two plates in the skull normally come together during gestation to form the entirety of the hard palate of the face, but sometimes these plates do not fuse. The result is a visible gap that includes both the hard and soft palates. Cleft lip occurs when the muscular structures around the hard and soft palates do not close properly but the palates themselves are intact. It is thought that cleft lip/palate is primarily genetic in nature. But other factors may be involved, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Reasons for Plastic Surgery as Treatment

Improved Speech Development

Closed palates and lips are necessary in order for a baby to produce the sounds he hears. But if these structures are open, the baby cannot form the correct mouth shape or position the tongue accurately for sound production. Plastic surgery for cleft lip and palate thus allows a baby to avoid language delays.

Improved Feeding

Children with cleft lip/palate often have a hard time nursing, drinking from a bottle, or eating with a utensil because they cannot use the palate structure or lip muscles to form a good suction or bring food off of the breast, bottle, or utensil, according to University of Maryland Medical Center. When the cleft is corrected through surgery, the infant is less frustrated at feeding times and is able to get adequate nutrition with less effort and less mess.

Lessened Social Stigma

Those with physical deformities unfortunately tend to be viewed as less intelligent or as having less desirability or importance. And some people even view those with deformities as being deserving of those conditions. Children with cleft lip or cleft palate are often stared at or ridiculed, which can erode self-esteem and make it difficult for the child to develop or to maintain relationships. Surgery can help the child feel like he is not ugly, isolated, or worthless—it can help him to feel “normal.”

When Surgery Can Be Done

Surgery for cleft lip and cleft palate usually is done at 2 to 3 months of age. This is only an average, as other factors (such infant illness, travel, insurance problems, etc.) can affect the ability to operate.

How Many Surgeries Are Needed

The number of plastic surgeries needed to correct cleft palate or cleft lip depends on the severity of the problem. In cases where the cleft is bilateral (the gap is on both sides of the palate), two surgeries usually are necessary instead of one.

After Surgery Care

Care after surgery can continue for up to 10 years. The Cleft Palate Foundation child usually is followed by an entire team that can monitor both physical and linguistic progress. However, the initial recovery time is fairly short, with major improvement seen after as little as a month and scarring fading over time.

Insurance Considerations

Some insurance companies will not cover plastic surgery for cleft lip and cleft palate because the conditions usually are not severe enough to threaten the life of the child. The procedure is considered purely cosmetic in such cases, especially since other treatments such as the use of a prosthetic to close the gap exist. Fortunately, most insurance companies recognize the physical limitations that the conditions cause and therefore cover some, if not all, of the cost.

Assessment

If your child has a cleft lip or cleft palate and you think surgery may be the best option of treatment, have your child assessed by a professional. They can tell you how severe the condition is and what to expect from the care team over the course of surgery and treatment, and they can help explain to your child (if older) what is going to happen to him in a way that makes the child feel safe through the treatment.

Lip enhancement is a great option for getting the look you want and deserve, but be smart and safe by thoroughly consulting with your doctor and plastic surgeon!

Lip enhancement has become so accessible that there’s no reason that anyone shouldn’t be able to have the procedure done. It’s so simple now, why not opt for enhancement and get the look we want? We wear makeup, don’t we? Why walk around feeling self-conscious when we don’t have to? If you feel your lips are too small or too thin, there’s a good chance it bothers you, even if for a second, every time you look in the mirror. With so many options out there, why not enhance your lips? And from that day forward, like everything you see in the mirror?

What is Lip Enhancement?

Also know as lip augmentation, there are a few different routes to take when looking to make your lips fuller. Some are as simple as lip plumping glosses you can buy at a cosmetics store, although many of these do not work. For more effective results that last longer than an hour, you’ll opt for either injections or surgery. Obviously, injections are less invasive. However, the results do not last as long. With injections, a “filler” substance is being injected into your lips, either of a synthetic or natural origin, according to www.lipaugmentation.com. Often this depends on whether you choose a medical spa or a plastic surgeon’s office. Look into both. There will be differences in price and in what you feel comfortable with. You have to completely trust the practitioner, as this is an appearance-altering process, and one that can even have side effects. Therefore, you may want to meet with the professional at the medical spa and a plastic surgeon, so you can really get to know them and what they would plan to do in this procedure. You will find someone you feel comfortable with, and from there the injections are easy. They can be done quickly and fit into your day’s schedule. The pain is moderate and does not last. And the results show up immediately. Just note that some of it is swelling and some results may only last about six months. That is the nature of injections, however. They are exponentially less expensive than surgery, but this is because they must be done periodically, whereas surgery is permanent.

For surgery, you will have to make consultation appointments with a plastic surgeon, who will determine the safest and most effective route. Since it is a surgical procedure in which the lips are opened to add filler, it will require downtime, anesthetics, and a brief period of recovery time, perhaps a few days until the swelling goes down. These results will be permanent. Therefore, even though it is more expensive than injections, you have to consider what works better for you in the long run. Surgery is expensive but is a one-time deal. Injections are more affordable but will add up over time.

Who should get Lip Enhancement?

Newimage.com fills us in on what common types of lips are candidates for lip enhancements. These are the issues that are effectively and successfully corrected with injections or surgery, and the ones that warrant such procedures:

Thin, flat lips with no shape, fullness, or definition. Interesting fact: This can happen as a result of smoking.

No upper lip, rather an upper lip that is significantly thinner than the lower lip and therefore out of proportion

No bottom lip: same as above in reverse

Irregular border: this is an unevenness or asymmetry in your lips. Maybe one side of your upper lip comes higher than the other. Maybe your lower lip appears smaller on one side than another.

Remember, if you feel your lips are too large, you can have lip reduction performed.

To have lip augmentation, you need to consider your health. You should be sure you do not have the following problems, and always consult with your doctor, who will know best if you are a candidate:

Have you used Accutane in the last six months? This causes a chance of scarring.

Do have any connective tissue disorders?

Do you suffer from lupus?

Any active diseases like heart diseases or asthma?

Allergies?

Diabetes?

Clotting problems?

Oral herpes?

Dental issues like abscesses?

What are the benefits of Lip Enhancement?

The most obvious benefit of lip enhancement is thicker, fuller lips. This can lead to less self-consciousness and higher confidence. Your face may be better proportioned. As far as injections, the fact that they don’t last as long could be a benefit, according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. You don’t have to commit to permanently fuller lips. More affordable on a case-by-case basis, this is a great option for pay-as-you-go. As long as you want fuller lips, you can continue receiving injections. Obviously, the surgery has the opposite benefit of being something you only have to do once, and the results will last. So, if you’re more committed, it could be the better choice.

Large, plump lips are a worldwide symbol for sexuality, youth, and beauty. Although lips naturally lose shape and fullness with age, it wasn’t until recently that plastic surgeons developed a way to reverse the signs of aging and bring back the sexy pout in a woman’s lips.

Large, plump lips are a worldwide symbol for sexuality, youth, and beauty.

Whether the goal is to look younger, more desirable, or to become more self-confident, lip enhancement is a relatively quick and simple way to give patients fuller, plumper lips, and reduce fine wrinkles around the mouth without having to go through major surgery or suffer through long recovery times.

With an increasing number of women going under the knife to reclaim their youthful look, business for cosmetic surgeons specializing in lip enhancements is booming. It’s thanks to this boom that lip enhancement procedures have gone down in price and up in quality and effectiveness. In today’s market, there are dozens of different types of lip injections and procedures, ensuring each patient can choose the best technique for her own body and beauty goals.

What is lip enhancement?

Lip enhancement is any procedure that increases the fullness of the lips through an injection of soft tissue—such as collagen—or through the placement of a synthetic material—such as a lip implant.

Thanks to recent improvements in cosmetic surgery technology, there are now more than eight different types of injections and more than four types of lip implants for patients to choose from, the most popular of which include collagen, fat, or Restylane for injections and fat-grafting or Gore-Tex for implantation.

Because collagen and fat are absorbed by the body, patients choosing these injection options will need repeat treatments every few months to maintain results. Newer options such as Gore-Tex and SoftForm are synthetic materials that can help a patient achieve a permanent result; however they also have a higher rate of allergic reaction because they are synthetic. Another option for patients who fear they may experience an allergic reaction is lip rejuvenation, which tightens the natural collagen and tissue beneath the lips to reduce wrinkles and give a more youthful appearance.

Who are the best candidates for lip enhancements?

Lip enhancement can be sought by anyone wishing for fuller, plumper lips and less wrinkles around the mouth. The best candidates should be in excellent health and free of oral herpes, scarring, or certain diseases such as diabetes, lupus, connective tissues disorders, or blood clotting problems that may complicate the procedure.

Because individuals have their own beauty goals, a number of different lip injection formulas and implants have been developed by researchers and physicians. Patients should be open and honest with their doctors about the desired outcome, and plan on working together with their doctor to decide on which lip enhancement procedure will best meet their needs and deliver favorable results.

Good candidates for lip enhancement should have realistic expectations, and understand that injections and implants are designed to improve the look of a patient’s lips and face and not to create a radical change in overall appearance.

What are the benefits of lip enhancements?

One of the many benefits of lip enhancement is the noticeable results that are achieved in a short amount of time with a short recovery period. Patients can expect to return to normal activities within one or two days, depending on the specific lip enhancement procedure and materials involved. Although swelling can sometimes last as long as two weeks, overall recovery periods for lip enhancement patients are among the shortest in the plastic surgery field.

For patients who may not be ready for a permanent change, temporary lip enhancement procedures such as collagen or fat injection can be especially tempting, as they produce noticeably fuller lips for as little as four weeks or as long as six months. Once they’ve seen the positive results, many patients later chose to return to their plastic surgeon for a follow up lip enhancement procedure, or opt for a permanent implant.

What risks are involved?

Although plastic surgeons offer a variety of different lip enhancement techniques, none is perfect. Like any plastic surgery, a small percentage of lip enhancement patients may experience side effects, including prolonged redness, swelling, itching, or firmness at the injection site. While rare, some patients may also experience bleeding, lip asymmetry, or infection which may require antibiotics or implant removal.

Many plastic surgeons perform a pre-treatment collagen skin test to determine whether a patient may have a bad reaction to the lip enhancement procedure. Patients with a history of allergic reactions, or those who are allergic to lidocaine—the local anesthetic used during a lip enhancement procedure—should tell their doctor beforehand and may not be a good candidate for lip enhancement. Patients experiencing skin infections or active inflammatory conditions in the days before their lip enhancement procedure may be asked to postpone the appointment until the condition clears.

If you suffer from Skinny Lip syndrome and harbor a secret desire to resemble Angelina Jolie, several options are available. You can become a professional apiarist, or beekeeper, and have a heaving hive on hand to keep your lips freshly stung and plump. You can only eat foods you know will produce an allergic reaction around your mouth. Or you can invest in a decent dermal lip filler.

Nice lips Angelina!

Remember, however, that while full, kissable lips are in, trout pouts are not. If you want to make the most of your lips, both literally and figuratively, do it right. Choose a surgeon or practitioner who knows what her or she is doing, and don’t go for the latest fad. Lip augmentation can take an hour, correcting a serious mistake can take years – often with little result.

Luscious Lip Fillers

Lip enhancement can be done in a variety of ways, and can not only plump up your lips but also smooth out wrinkles around the mouth, which normally occur either with age and/or as a result of smoking. And it’s not just a girl thing: both women and occasionally men seek out this form of non-surgical cosmetic procedure.

Most dermal lip fillers are temporary, meaning that they will require top-ups over a period of time. While some advertise their permanence, the result of permanent fillers often is lumpy and bumpy, so it’s advised to stay away. All fillers are injected using a local anesthetic and there is usually some bruising and swelling afterward which should subside within a few days, and itching and localized pain at the site are also common.

Dermal lip fillers ideally should increase lip volume so that the bottom lip appears to be 1.5 times bigger than the upper one. In alphabetical order, they include:

Artecoll is made, in part, from bovine-sourced collagen (see below), although it contains tiny Plexigas microbeads, so the effect can last up to five years. Some cosmeticians don’t like to use it in the lips – and there must be a reason why…

Collagen Injections: Derived from cattle connective tissue, it used to be the most popular lip filler. It’s less so now after some high-profile people used it to augment their lips with near-disastrous results. The best way to avoid this from happening to you is to have an allergy skin test at least 48 hours in advance of any collagen procedure. The effect can last up to 18 months, but complications include skin infection and/or ulceration, asymmetry and the dreaded trout pout.

Cosmoderm/Cosmoplast: May sound a bit Frankensteinesque, as this filler is made from human skin grown in a lab. Gross but less painful than other fillers. Maybe you can ask to grow your own.

DermaLive/DermaDeep: Made of a mixture of acrylic hydrogel and hyaluronic acid, this filler is used for both enhancing lips and smoothing out deep wrinkles in the face and elsewhere.

Fat Transfer: Here’s an idea: why not harvest blobs of fat from other parts of your body, such as your thighs and butt, then inject them into your lips! Give another meaning to kissing ass… Critics say it works less well in the lip area than other parts of the body as the fat moves around a lot.

Juvederm: Similar to Restylane (see below) and its sister, Perlane, Juvaderm claims it has a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid, which is responsible for retaining skin moisture, and is smoother than some other injectables. Effects can last from six months to a year.

Restylane: An injectable gel manufactured in Sweden, Restylane is animal-free, meaning that it will not affect people who have allergies to animal by-products such as milk or eggs. Its effect lasts for up to nine months and works in much the same way as naturally produced hyaluronic acid.

Tissue Transfer: Another fun one. Take tissue from your wrist or mouth and thread into your lips for a permanent, plumped up look.

Trout Pouts of the Rich and Famous

Botched lip augmentation can ruin not only your mouth, but your career as well, as these stars can attest…

Hollywood star Meg Ryan became a poster child for botched lip enhancement in 2005, when she went from being America’s Sweetheart to The Joker in Batman virtually overnight. Critics have speculated that she went for a permanent filler instead of a temporary one due to the stretched-out nature of her lips. Meg has declined to comment.

Lindsay Lohan has reportedly been sporting odd-looking big lips recently, making celebrity spotters wonder why she went under the syringe. In the same vein (not literally), actress Brittany Murphy was seen at New York Fashion Week with what fashionistas have dubbed an “unnecessary trout pout”.

British actress Leslie Ash had an allergic reaction to collagen injections in her lips in 2002 and suffered an enormous trout pout as a result. She was publicly ridiculed for her large lips for years, and has since become a spokesperson for people who have suffered similar problems. “The beauty industry is unregulated so you must do the legwork,” she said in an interview.

Pop star Pete Burns got a £1 million pay-out after a cosmetic surgeon “wrecked his career and his life” when he had a botched lip job. Pete has had more than 100 operations to correct the damage on his lips, which suffered horrific swelling and such bad blisters that he couldn’t eat or talk.

Playing it Safe

The vast majority of people who want plastic surgery on their lips seek to have them augmented, by making them fuller and plumper. Yet, believe it or not, there are some people who seek the opposite effect. If your lips are too large and you want to turn down their volume, this is a simple walk-in procedure that can be done quickly (but not painlessly). You can choose to have one lip reduced, or both. Just make sure you end up with a matching set!

For most of us, however, lip enhancement is shorthand for bigger is better, a modern-day way to make people correct what they believe to be nature’s mistake. Don’t go for this treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and if you have certain medical conditions or are taking specific medications it’s a good idea to consult your doctor beforehand. Not recommended for people with oral cold sores, lupus, blood clotting disorders or other illnesses such as diabetes.

If you eventually decide that having luscious lips means more to you than anything else, look carefully into your options. Be aware that side effects, while rare, do occur. You will be paying anything from $300 to $5,000 on up to give your mouth the look you’ve always dreamed of, so make sure you are getting what you pay for. Say cheese!

With recent advances in lip augmentation techniques, more and more people are springing for a trout pout. Find out which method is right for you in this catch-all lip augmentation guide.

I have several friends who have chosen cosmetic surgery, and lip augmentation is popular among them. The change in one friend has been remarkably positive, vastly improving her confidence after her fat grafting procedure. Based on her example alone, I would recommend this minor procedure to anyone.

There are several techniques employed in lip augmentation. Often, only a local anesthetic is needed, and the healing process involves only minor discomfort after a couple of days. Among the most common procedures are the following:

Collagen

Made from collagen found in bovine epidermis, collagen is used as a temporary enhancement. The treatment lasts for up to three months and can be repeated when required. Tests are done in advance to ensure that there is no allergic response. If a patient is found to have an allergic response, several alternatives are available.

Fat

In this treatment, fat cells are taken from another area of the patient’s body and then injected. This procedure is often preferred to collagen injection since there is no chance of allergic reaction, and the results tend to last longer.

Fat grafting

The patient’s own body fat is taken from an area such as the abdomen, and transplanted into the lips. The treatment usually results in a permanent enhancement.

Autologen

Autologen is a form of collagen that is extracted from the patients themselves. Again, there are no chances of allergic infection and the results are long lasting.

There are many other procedures, such as the popular and quite successful use of AlloDerm. The use of Alloderm sounds a bit scary, since it is extracted from a cadaver. However, it is one of the best, most reliable forms of semi-permanent lip augmentation, often lasting up to six months or more, with only a very small chance of infection.

Other techniques involve surgical implants using various synthetic materials, which can essentially last a lifetime and have been proven safe and effective.

Consult Your Doctor

There are a number plastic surgeons that are reputable and caring and often offer free consultation.

What Will my Friends and Family say?

This might be the biggest hurdle to jump when considering any sort of lip augmentation procedure. Those that love you will support you. Quite honestly, most people you deal with in life, even close friends, may never notice. Unless your procedure results in a radical alteration, they will most likely sense an overall change about you. Your family and closest friends will inevitably support you and maybe even join you, once they see the positive changes.
