The use of chemical peels in cosmetic dermatology can benefit a wide range of patients.

Looking for a way to get clearer, fresher looking skin? According to Dr. Carter G. Abel, M.D., a cosmetic dermatologist in Annadale, New Jersey, chemical peels are one of the biggest secrets to younger looking skin.

Speaking from his office at Abel Dermatology, the Annadale cosmetic dermatology expert explains that there are three main types of candidates for chemical peel treatments: acne patients, sun damaged patients, and cosmetic dermatology patients in Annadale.

The first type of patient who can be considered an excellent candidate for a professional chemical peel is an acne patient. Younger people who suffer from acne should consider chemical peels for their ability to exfoliate and smooth the skin, while also getting rid of large cysts and nodules at the same time. Dr. Abel says most patients suffering from adolescent acne will come in for chemical peels approximately four times each year.

The second type of patient ideally suited for chemical peels is someone with severely sun-damaged skin. Adult men and women suffering from skin cancer as a result of the sun damage they incurred during their younger years are great candidates for chemical peels. The chemical peels offered at Dr. Abel’s Annadale cosmetic dermatology practice exfoliate the skin and help eliminate pre-cancers. As a result, patients who undergo this treatment at least four times a year can expect to have fewer skin cancers developing along the facial area. Surgery is therefore less necessary, and Dr. Abel says people are always thrilled to find a cosmetic solution that helps them avoid going under the knife.

The third and final group of chemical peel patients are people coming in for purely cosmetic reasons. Dr. Abel says patients with fine lines, wrinkles, and brown spots can get great results after just a single appointment. The brown spots that many older women complain of will start to fade after one or two peels, and fine lines will diminish over time. Dr. Abel’s Annadale cosmetic dermatology patients report having tighter pores and slightly tighter skin as a result of their quarterly chemical peels, as well.

Most people who have chemical peels done are returning for follow up treatments at least four times each year, however Dr. Abel says the specific frequency with which a patient returns will depend on his or her ultimate goal. Some patients will come in every four to six weeks, while others will return just once or twice each year.

Laser resurfacing is a very simple procedure that takes only 20 minutes in the office. This is a laser-inspired procedure along the skin, which helps reduce wrinkles without resorting to the use of Botox or fillers.

Laser resurfacing and vein removal are extremely popular procedures among women who are concerned about the appearance of their skin. According to Dr. Edward Buch and Marla Lynne Bell at Body Chic, a med spa in Somerset, NJ, laser resurfacing in particular is great for people with acne scarring, sun damage, and superficial wrinkles.

Bell goes on to explain that laser resurfacing is a very simple procedure that takes only 20 minutes in the office. This is a laser-inspired procedure along the skin, which helps reduce wrinkles without resorting to the use of Botox or fillers. At Body Chic med spa in Somerset, NJ, laser resurfacing is a procedure that is done on faces that have been numbed with a topical gel. Although some patients may experience mild discomfort, there is absolutely no pain involved in a laser resurfacing procedure.

As far as downtime is concerned, Bell says that the downtime necessary after undergoing laser resurfacing can vary depending on the severity of the skin damage and how much time the patient spent under the laser. Bell and her staff at the Somerset, NJ med spa can adjust the power of the laser based on the amount of downtime that the patient has to recover before needing to go back to work. If a woman only has two free days before she must return to work, for example, then Bell will typically do an abbreviated version of the laser resurfacing procedure.

After the resurfacing procedure is finished, the medical team at the Somerset, NJ med spa simply asks that the patient apply a special moisturizing gel to her face for a few days. The patient’s face will peel, and Bell emphasizes that this peeling off of skin is completely normal. As the skin peels off, the sun damage, fine lines, and wrinkles will slowly disappear. Although some patients may notice results immediately, the best results of laser resurfacing will be seen over time. Even at four months out, patients are still reporting improved tightening and collagen stimulation in the skin.

Along with their laser resurfacing, many patients at the Body Chic med spa in Somerset, NJ will also request vein removal treatments using Dr. Buch’s specialty laser. Laser vein treatments are growing in popularity, in large part because women are finally discovering that they do not have to live with unsightly varicose veins or spider veins. Dr. Buch can treat veins using multiple modalities, including injection sclerotherapy, local vein removal, and minimally invasive procedures involving lasers or radio-frequency VNUS closure.

For more information on any of the procedures described in this article, patients are encouraged to contact Body Chic for a consultation appointment.

The alphahydroxy acid chemical peel is a painless facial solution that happens to be among the lightest and most popular peels among patients.

Patients who come into a dermatologist’s office these days have a handful of options to choose from when it comes to facial peels. Each type of peel offers unique benefits to suit different types of dermatological needs. Among the most popular types of gentle peels, however, is the alphahydroxy acid chemical peel, according to Dr. Jonathan Zizmor.

A noted dermatologist in NYC, Dr. Zizmor explains that the alphahydroxy acid chemical peel is a painless facial solution that happens to be among the lightest and most popular peels he offers at his practice. This acid compound comes from apples and other fruits, and is known for being the most gentle option available for patients who are curious about trying out a facial peel for the very first time.

Unlike more serious types of chemical peels, the alphahydroxy peel requires no recovery time whatsoever. On the downside, however, patients must undergo a number of painless alphahydroxy chemical facial peel sessions before they can expect to achieve their desired outcomes.

In order to give his patients the results they want without requiring them to come in for quite as many sessions, Dr. Zizmor says he offers a higher concentration of the alphahydroxy to his clients than what they can get over-the-counter or elsewhere. If someone wants a more serious change in her appearance with the help of a chemical facial peel, then Dr. Zizmor has a number of options he will offer to the patient as an alternative.

Nonetheless, the alphahydroxy chemical facial peel remains the best painless option for women in NYC with darker skin, because women with deeper skin tone cannot undergo many of the same chemical peels as women with paler skin, according to Dr. Zizmor. Women with darker skin tone will get dark spots if they work with a dermatologist who uses chemicals that are too harsh in their peels. For women who fall into this category, the alphahydroxy chemical facial peel is a fantastic, safe, pain-free option.

Dr. Zizmor emphasizes that the painless chemical facial peel options he offers at his NYC dermatology practice are very different from the facial peels offered at cosmetologist’s offices. The women who come into his office are expecting to leave with actual, visible results, and the over-the-counter facial peels offered at spas and other establishments cannot deliver those types of quantifiable results.

Although Dr. Zizmor says that any chemical peel will help improve the looks of a woman’s face temporarily, the immediate effect that most women notice is simply caused by the swelling of the face. When the face is swollen, the deep lines appear more faint. When the swelling goes down, however, those deep lines will come right back. This is not the case with an alphahydroxy chemical facial peel offered through a dermatologist’s office like Dr. Zizmor’s though. Specifically, the chemical peels Dr. Zizmor provides can improve the lines on a woman’s face even after the initial swelling has gone down. Although chemical peels cannot take out the deepest lines and generally work better on reducing fine lines, they will exfoliate the skin and stimulate collagen. Cell turnover will be increased, and a woman’s skin will begin to look smoother fairly quickly.

In fact, cell turnover is one the key elements to a good chemical peel, according to Dr. Zizmor. He says that the reason that babies and young children have such fresh-looking skin is because of the rapid cell turnover time that humans have when they are first born. As we age, however, cell turnover slows down tremendously. Dr. Zizmor says that having a regular, painless, facial chemical peel once every six months is a great way speed up cell turnover in the face and help the skin look its best. In times where an alphahydroxy chemical facial peel is not the right option for one of his patients, such as if the patient has dark spots because of acne, Dr. Zizmor will adjust the chemicals he is using and try a different peel.

Anyone in the New York City area looking for younger, fresher skin should contact Dr. Zizmor’s office to set up an appointment.

It’s a routine with which many women are far too familiar. You wake up early every morning, rush to get your kids off to school, and then hop in the car and hope that traffic won’t somehow get in the way. Your workday is filled with meetings and emails galore, and by the time 6 p.m. rolls around, you look up and wonder what happened to your day. At that point, you gather your belongings, hurry home to run some errands and then get dinner started, and eventually collapse into bed – only to wake up the next morning and do it all over again.

If this type of schedule sounds like yours, then the idea of taking time out of your day to visit a medical spa is something you probably don’t even have the option of considering. Fortunately, there is a way for you to take care of your skin without disrupting your ever-hectic daily routine. Thanks to the Natura 30 minute express acid peel, customers in the Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale areas can come in for a quick dose of skin rejuvenation without so much as missing a beat.

Kim Dahle is a skin care consultant at Natura Medspa & Laser Center, a full-service medical spa that offers everything from weight loss treatment to laser hair removal to rejuvenating facials, and according to her, the Natura 30 minute express acid peel is extremely popular among customers, and for good reason. Also known as the “lunch hour peel,” the Natura 30 minute express acid peel uses a medical grade blend of glycolic, salicylic and lactic acids to exfoliate the skin in a jiffy. This particular type of peel is effective in minimizing blemishes and other such facial imperfections within minutes. Best of all, it offers the benefits of traditional chemical peels without all the side effects associated with deeper types of peels.

If you’re thinking that the words “acid peel” sound rather painful, then you’re not totally off base. Dahle will admit that while the 30 minute express acid peel ultimately feels great, it can sting a bit during application. However, for the most part, she finds that patients are able to tolerate it without too much discomfort, especially because the overall process is fairly quick.

As far as aftercare is concerned, Dahle insists that little is involved. Those who undergo the 30 minute express acid peel should avoid the sun following treatment but can otherwise go about the rest of their respective days as normal. Of course, the presence of flaky, peeling skin might not exactly work wonders for your professional appearance. So if you’re going to schedule this type of treatment, then plan for it accordingly.

Remember, just because your life is jam-packed with day to day obligations doesn’t mean that you can’t treat yourself to a 30 minute window of skin-related maintenance. Thanks to the Natura 30 minute express acid peel, you really can have it all – great skin, and the ability to maintain the illusion that you are, indeed, Wonder Woman.

Perhaps you’ve been suffering from acne more so lately than ever before. Or maybe your skin just seems to be sporting a dull, lackluster appearance. No matter what your specific problem may be, the right chemical peel can truly work wonders for your skin and self-esteem.

A chemical peel involves applying a chemical solution to the skin that causes the top layer to peel off. Why is this important? After the top layer of skin peels off, it exposes a second layer of skin that has fresher, undamaged cells. The result is a glowing complexion that can work wonders for one’s appearance.

Of course, the tricky thing about chemical peels is that so many options are out there. While a good skin care consultant should be able to recommend the option that will best serve your skin’s needs, you may want to consider finding a medical spa that will tailor a chemical peel to suit you. In fact, one such establishment already has this particular option in place. Natura Medspa & Laser Center, a Florida medical spa serving the Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton areas, offers its own signature corrective peel to cater to individual client needs. According to Kim Dahle, a skin care consultant at Natura, this is one of the many aspects that sets her facility apart from the rest.

The Natura signature corrective peel is a chemical peel that is designed to suit clients on an individual basis. According to Dahle, the type of peel that works for one client might not work for another, so it’s important to offer this option for those looking to make the most of their medical spa dollars. When a patient comes to Natura and requests a chemical peel, she will first be evaluated by a skin care professional to determine what her problem and concerns. If the issue at hand is acne, then the peel can be tailored to address the matter and prevent future breakouts; and if the problem is sun damage, then the peel can be formulated to condition and tone the skin accordingly.

Of course, the words “chemical peel” tend to evoke a rather painful connotation, but according to Dahle, Natura’s signature corrective peels are generally quite tolerable. Although a signature corrective peel at Natura might involve a tingling sensation at the time of application, it is not likely to require much (if any) downtime after the fact. Of course, a degree of itching and peeling is to be expected, but those side effects are practically a given with any sort of chemical peel (especially the whole “peeling” aspect).

Remember, when it comes to medical spa treatments in general, your best bet is finding options that are likely to work well for you in particular. So if your goal is to get personalized treatment and the best value for your money, then visit a medical spa that will cater its procedures to meet your specific needs. As a customer, that’s really not a lot to ask.

Perhaps your skin is looking rougher than usual these days; or maybe you can’t help but notice the fact that your skin doesn’t glow like it used to. If your facial skin seems to be falling victim to time-related wear and tear, then it’s essential that you do something about it. After all, lackluster facial skin can turn an otherwise attractive appearance into one that is dull and uninspired.

If your skin is in serious need of some tender loving care, then you should visit a local medical spa to look into your exfoliation options. As a seasoned skin care consultant at Florida’s Natura Medspa & Laser Center, a medical spa serving Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale that offers everything from cellulite removal to laser skin treatment to spider vein therapy, Kim Dahle is a firm believer in the importance of medical grade exfoliation. The purpose of exfoliation is to allow the skin to shed its worn, damaged outer layer to reveal a surface that is smooth and healthy looking. While most medical spa patients can benefit from a number of exfoliation methods, Dahle tends to recommend the Natura triple fruit acid treatment to younger patients.

The triple fruit acid treatment uses a combination of enzymes from a variety of fruits to aid in the exfoliation process. Specifically, the formula incorporates a 30% AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) blend of lemon, passionflower fruit, and lactic acid from molasses to produce a type of exfoliation that is effective without producing too much skin irritation.

What makes the triple fruit acid treatment suitable for teenagers and younger patients on a whole? According to Dahle, the triple fruit acid treatment is not as intense as most regular chemical peels, and as such, it is generally more tolerable than some of the harsher options out there. Although the triple fruit acid treatment is comparatively mild, it still does a great job at exfoliating and enhancing the skin’s overall appearance. In fact, the triple fruit acid treatment will often serve as a good starting point for those looking to delve deeper into the world of medical spa treatments. After all, it’s not always the best idea to start a new patient with a deep chemical peel if her skin isn’t used to this type of procedure. The triple fruit acid treatment is therefore an effective method of preparing the skin for chemical peels and deeper methods of exfoliation down the line.

If your your skin could use some professional attention, then you may want to consider finding a facility that offers an option that is similar to Natura’s triple fruit acid treatment. After all, you deserve to be happy with the way your skin looks. Thanks to the triple fruit acid treatment, you can achieve healthy, vibrant looking skin that is sure to turn heads after even one medical spa session.

If you happen to have sensitive skin, then the idea of visiting a medical spa for treatment can be very overwhelming. After all, if your skin has a tendency to react poorly to standard over the counter cleansers and creams, then how is it going to respond when you subject it to a series of medical grade products and processes?

If you live in Southern Florida and have sensitive skin that has caused you to shy away from medical spa treatments for far too long, then there is one option you should consider – the Natura AHAminoPlex treatment. Kim Dahle is a skin care consultant at Natura Medspa & Laser Center, a medical spa serving Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale that offers everything from laser hair removal to cellulite removal to spider vein therapy, and according to her, the Natura AHAminoPlex treatment is perfect for patients with sensitive skin in desperate need of exfoliation.

Why is exfoliation so important? The exfoliation process involves shedding the dry, damaged outer layers of the skin to reveal the smoother, healthier layers that would otherwise remain hidden underneath. The extent to which the skin exfoliates naturally can differ from person to person, and as we get older, we simply don’t tend to exfoliate as much on our own. In order to avoid an unsightly buildup of dead skin cells, it’s important that everyone – including those with sensitive skin – receive some form of medical grade exfoliation on occasion.

So what’s so special about that Natura AHAminoPlex treatment? According to Dahle, this particular treatment utilizes a special combination of acids that will exfoliate the skin without subjecting it to the harsh side effects of deeper chemical peels. In fact, the formula used is specifically designed to cater to sensitive skin to ensure that those who undergo the process don’t walk away with the burning, stinging sensation associated with most common adverse skin reactions.

Another great thing about the Natura AHAminoPlex treatment is that it can be administered in less than an hour. In fact, people can come in during their lunch hour and walk away with smooth and healthy skin. Best of all, those who undergo this procedure can immediately resume their regularly scheduled activities without disruption.

If you have sensitive skin, then it’s natural to balk at the idea of undergoing medical spa treatment of any sort. However, by avoiding the problem, you are serving your skin well in the long run. Rather than shy away from medical spa procedures, try finding a facility that is likely to cater to your specific needs. Remember, a good skin care consultant will be more than happy to address your concerns and come up with a treatment plan that will help your skin, not hurt it. So the next time you glance in the mirror and aren’t too happy with what you see, don’t suffer in silence. Instead, visit a medical spa like Natura that offers treatment for sensitive skin, and get ready to start feeling better on multiple levels.

While many types of chemical peels are out there, glycolic and salicylic acid peels are among the most popular ones. Here, Dr. Brian Hurley, owner of Illumination MedSpa in Irmo, South Carolina, explains the difference between these two types of chemical peels.

The two types of chemical peels we offer at Illumination MedSpa are glycolic and salicylic. Our peels contain about 20% and 30% of each acid, so they’re not too strong — but they’re strong enough to get the job done without the client experiencing major peeling and redness for days.

Glycolic acid is what’s called an alpha-hydroxy acid. It’s great for improving the skin’s surface appearance by removing the dead skin cells on the skin’s top layer. It works well for any skin type and color. The glycolic acid peel is the best peel available for fighting the appearance of aging. It helps give the skin a smooth, exfoliated look, much like a microdermabrasion. It’s also great when used in combination with a microdermabrasion treatment.

Glycolic acid peels are wonderful when done during the span of several sessions, such as once a week for six weeks in combination with microdermabrasion. The peels can start to be peeled off after three to four minutes, increasing to 10 minutes by the end of the six sessions.

Salicylic acid is what’s called a beta-hydroxy acid. This peel is wonderful for the treatment of acne. It loosens the skin cells, helping get rid of pore-clogging material. It’s the best peel for oily or acne-prone skin. A salicylic acid peel can burn much more than a glycolic peel, so it’s prudent to be cautious when combining this peel with microdermabrasion.

Anyone considering a chemical peel should have it done by a physician or by an esthetician under the supervision of the doctor.

Dr. Guljeet Sohal is the owner of Balle Bliss, a luxury med spa based in her hometown of Cypress, Texas. Her goal is to bring specialized, personalized care back into the practice of medicine, and to offer clients an experience they’ll want to return to again and again. Here, she discusses the use of safe, gentle chemical peels.

Anybody is a good candidate for a chemical peel because at Balle Bliss med spa we carry the PCA line of gentle chemical peels. That’s the name of a special skin care line which has different types of safe peels that are nonirritating, with each one designed for a different skin type.

Types of skin that pertain to this line range anywhere from Skin Type One to Skin Type Six, which is a color gradation system with one being the lightest. So different peels cater for different types of skin, and correspondingly to different types of skin problems.

PCA peels are made from salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid found in a variety of natural substances such as willow bark. It works by helping get rid of the top layer off dead skin cells gently, revealing fresher, softer skin underneath.

Here are the various problems with our specific line of PCA peels will help:

Acne: The PCA Acne Peel will calm down skin and clean out pores. It has an antibacterial serum that will penetrate deep into your pores to help get rid of the bacteria that causes acne.

Hyper-pigmentation: This is the medical term for what people commonly refer to as age spots, or the pigmented spots which often appear after pregnancy. The peels we use to treat this are based on hydro-phenols, a bleaching cream which helps smooth the pigmentation in your face and give it a nice glow.

Anti-aging: Based on glycolic acid and vitamin C, these are antioxidant peels which help improve the appearance of fine lines, as well as improve the skin sagging that so often accompanies aging.

Sensitive skin: Sensi peels are great for people with very sensitive skin who for that reason cannot use a lot of chemicals. All the peel which fall into this category are hypoallergenic and are good for sensitive skin types.

Getting that glow: Our pumpkin peels are something special we have for the holidays, they are peels which exfoliate, or get rid of the top layer of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin, and therefore give you a brightness and a glow.

At Balle Bliss med spa, our PCA skin peels are actually different than the chemical peels most people are used to having carried out on their face. There are soft neutralizing peels, which means that they are incredibly kind to skin. The sebum or oil in your skin neutralizes the acid, so we don’t actually clean it off. It is neutralized itself by your skin’s own oil.

As a result, the peeling and redness people associate normally with chemical peels is not as dramatic with these peels. Within 15 minutes, usually the redness is gone, and we can supply makeup. So you leave our med spa looking like you haven’t had anything done at all, until you see the beautiful result on your face.

To figure out if you a good candidate for chemical peeling and which type of peeling may be right for you, consult with your doctor.

These days everyone is looking for ways to renew their skin and get back to a younger appearance. Thousands to millions of dollars are spent each year on makeovers, surgeries, specialized facials, and even facial creams in order to get a younger look.

People are looking for ways to decrease the years which can be seen in their face. “Years” can be defined as wrinkles, acne scars, or even sun damage. The aged skin comes with time and no one can really avoid looking somewhere near their age or at worse much older than their real age.

Chemical peels have been around since the ancient Greeks and ancient Egyptians and is actually considered to be one of the oldest cosmetic practices in the world. The popularity of this procedure has grown not only because of it’s effectiveness but because of its almost instantaneous results.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel, also known as chemexfoliation or derma-peeling, is exactly how it sounds. Chemicals are placed onto the face to help peel off layers of skin. These layers of skin usually are old, have scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage. Underneath the older layers of skin, lay new layers of more youthful looking skin.

The chemicals placed onto the skin cause the skin to blister. The blistered skin then peels off leaving the new skin to be exposed. The chemical peel does not have to be used only for facial treatments. They can also be used to help regenerate new skin on the neck and hands.

Before a chemical peel the dermatologist may ask you to prepare your skin for the procedure. You may be asked to stop using specific medications and may also be asked to prepare the skin with Retin-A, Renova, or glycolic acid.

During the procedure, the dermatologist will first clean the skin using a cleansing agent then areas are covered such as the eyes and the hair. The chemicals used may include:

glycolic acid

trichloroacetic acid

salicylic acid

lactic acid

carbolic acid (phenol)

The client may feel hot to warm feelings around the area being “peeled”. This feeling may last around 10 minutes and will turn to a stinging feeling. Areas should be compressed with cool cloths afterwards to relive the stinging.

The three types of peels used are superficial, medium, and deep. The dermatologist will consult with the client to figure out which type of peel she needs based on the amount of damage to the skin. Depending on the type of peel, results will vary.

Normal Results are as follows:

Superficial Peel: Also known as the lunchtime peel can cause redness along with approximately five days of scaling.

Medium and Deep Peel: Deep blistering will occur and brown crusty patches may materialize as the new skin will not appear for several weeks.

Bandages may need to be placed over the peeled areas as well as antibiotics may need to be prescribed so that infection does not occur.

The Best Candidates:

The best candidates for chemical peels will include lighter skin clients as they are shown to have better results. This is a case by case basis so darker skin clients can consult with their dermatologist to see if they will be a good candidate.

Individuals who are usually not recommended for chemical peels include:

People who have skin which scar or discolor easily

People who have had specific cosmetic procedures done

People who have taken isotretinoin within the past six months

As always, consultation with the dermatologist as well as the client’s doctor is recommended to ensure that chemical peeling will be beneficial for the client.

What are the Benefits:

The major benefit of peeling is the feeling of being young again. Who doesn’t want to have the natural, youthful glow from 20 years ago? Clients looking to chemical peels to rejuvenate their skin often look for these beneficial results:

Diminish wrinkles

Diminish scars

Decrease sun damage (sun spots)

Overall healthy glow of new skin

Smoothing roughness on skin

While there are benefits, there are also results which the chemical peel cannot guarantee. Chemical peels cannot tighten loose or sagging skin, cannot fix deep scars, pore size will not decrease, and veins will not decrease.
