Choosing Breast Reduction Surgery

While others may envy the look, many women with very large breasts often struggle with a variety of medical conditions as a direct result. Many times, explains Marcus Crawford M.D., who specializes in breast reduction surgery in his Atlanta office, these women have neck, shoulder, and back pain from supporting the weight of their breasts. Additionally, their bras often leave deep grooves in their shoulders and may even cause rashes as a result of the breasts and fabric constantly rubbing together. Not to mention, he says, extremely large breasts can often times make women or teenage girls feel extremely self-conscious and uncomfortable with their bodies.
Instead of using clothing to cover up your breasts or trying to muster through the pain that they cause you, Dr. Crawford of Crawford Plastic Surgery encourages women to consider reduction mammaplasty surgery, more commonly referred to as the breast reduction. The objective of the procedure is to give the patient smaller breasts that are in better proportion with the rest of her body, Dr. Crawford explains. This is done, he says, by removing fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts, which in turn makes them lighter and firmer.
In nearly all instances, breast reduction surgery is chosen for physical relief rather than for aesthetic improvements. In fact, because of the pain and physical limitations that larger breasts may cause, your surgery can be covered by your health insurance company if the amount of volume removed meets certain medical standards.
After your surgery has been completed, Dr. Crawford says that you can expect to appear as though you have lost weight and now have a smaller frame. For the first time, he adds, many women are finally able to purchase bras off the rack and buy clothes that are of a smaller size. Additionally, many patients have also reported that after surgery, they are finally able to get rid of the medications that had long been used for pain relief.
Following breast reduction surgery, you will find that you are able to sit up straighter, walk easier, and get rid of the grooves in your shoulders previously caused by bra straps. This change in your appearance will also help with underlying self-esteem issues and allow you to participate in physical activities that you may not have been able to perform before.
For more on the details of the procedure and how it will affect you personally, Dr. Crawford suggests that you meet with a board-certified and experienced surgeon in your area who can provide you with a clear picture of the process. After this one procedure, you can alleviate the pain and discomfort and finally get to enjoy your breasts rather than loathe them.
