Women who are experiencing problems associated with their menstrual cycles, whether they are just beginning to menstruate or have already entered menopause, can benefit from naturopathic medicine, according to Dr. Helene Pulnik ND, LAc. She is a naturopathic physician who owns Glastonbury Naturopathic Center and Wholistic Spa in Glastonbury, CT, and provides a host of services, including nutritional counseling and acupuncture, to help regulate a woman’s hormones.
Menstrual problems can develop at the time of the menarche, when a female starts menstruating, all the way through menopause. There are dozens and dozens of issues that can occur or be associated with menstruation, which can affect a woman’s health both physically and mentally.
Our individually designed wholistic ways of treating menstrual irregularities include a complete exam, regular pap smears, and lab testing to see what is going on with a woman’s hormones, so that we can assess more easily what steps need to be taken next.
Changes to Diet are Important
One of our foundations is about changing the diet, which we have found can really affect hormones and hormone regulations. We deal with this by tailoring the right diet to each woman’s personal needs. In particular, we concentrate on analyzing every patient’s diet to see if she is consuming a lot of foods that contain high estrogen levels, which can throw the hormonal balance way off.
Women who are extremely athletic have menstrual irregularities because of extreme physical activity, and they need to have a balanced diet as well as take the right supplements. After doing a very thorough individualized complete medical history and exam, as well as any lab testing that needs to be done, we do nutritional counseling and acupuncture.
Acupuncture Regulates Hormones
Acupuncture is also a fantastic method of regulating female hormones. In addition, there are many studies which attest to the fact that acupuncture improves the success of fertility 40 to 50 percent. It also helps regulate hormone regularities during peri-menopause. Finally, it helps the symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, decreased energy and mood swings.
We also offer our clients a host of nutritional supplements that can help balance the hormonal system without causing any toxic side effects. We only use products that are safe and organic, and we are trained to be aware of any possible interactions between prescribed medications and herbs. It is this approach that helps us truly do the best for our clients.
