Different Types of Breast Surgery

Just like other plastic surgery procedures, there are several breast surgery options you can choose from. Dr. Jeffrey Hall, an Austin breast augmentation board certified plastic surgeon at Hall Plastic Surgery & Rejuvenation Center, points out some of the different breast surgery options, and the need that each option satisfies.

Breast Implants

The standard Austin breast augmentation procedure to enlarge the size of the breasts involves using a silicone or saline implant, says Dr. Hall. Both materials are bio-compatible with the human body.  Clinical studies have shown that both implant types are completely safe for the patient.  So, both silicone and saline have a minimal impact on the body if complications like a rupture were ever to occur, says Dr. Hall. Choosing whether a patient should receive silicone or saline implants depends on what that patient wants, as well as what the doctor feels will give the patient the best results. During an Austin breast augmentation consultation, the patient will go through the various size options, try on some implants, and get a better idea of what size they are looking for, says Dr. Hall. The plastic surgeon should help the patient manage their expectations and give them advice on what size correlates best to the patient’s shape. Coming in initially with an idea of what size you like is always helpful in the consultation process.

Breast Reduction

Dr. Hall says that some women are looking to minimize volume. This may be for cosmetic purposes, but for some patients it is an insurance necessity due to the medical issues that enlarged breasts can cause, such as severe back pain.

Breast lift

Hall Plastic Surgery & Rejuvenation Center says that a breast lift is intended to enhance the shape, position, and perkiness of the breasts while maintaining their current size. Dr. Hall says that oftentimes, patients will combine a breast augmentation with a breast lift in order to achieve more optimal results with volume and placement of the implants.

Breast Reconstruction

Dr. Hall points out that many people misconstrue plastic surgery as being purely cosmetic, but there are many procedures that fall outside of the cosmetic category. Like breast reductions performed to reduce back pain, breast reconstruction can be performed on patients who have had breast cancer, and the appearance of their breasts has been drastically altered from the disease. Dr. Hall says while about 70 percent of his practice is cosmetic, as the Chief of Plastic Surgery for Seton Medical Group, about 30 percent of the procedures he performs are strictly for reconstructive purposes.
