How to Achieve a Natural Look With Breast Augmentation

North Carolina native Dr. David Reid is a board certified plastic surgeon at New Dimensions Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery. Based out of Belleville, Illinois, Dr. Reid specializes in cosmetic procedures intended to improve the lives of his patients. Here, he explains what the “natural look” is, and why so many breast augmentation patients are looking to achieve it.

When you are going into a breast augmentation procedure, you really do not want to overdue it. As a cosmetic surgeon, you just don’t want to take a petite gal and take her breasts up to DD.

For the most part, determining what implant size is going to give patients a natural or unnatural look is pretty straightforward. And for the most part, giving a smaller patient extremely large breasts is not going to be a natural look that is going to be flattering.

With that said, though, it is important to point out that not all women want a natural look with their breast augmentation. Some women come in wanting something. So determining what is a “natural look” has more to do with whatever kind of look a patient is going for. As a cosmetic surgeon, it is my job to help my patients reach their goal while also using my experience and expertise to give them a better idea of what to expect in terms of implant sizes and what the outcome of a surgery will be like.

For the most part, saline and silicone implants come in a full range of sizes. So deciding on a size that is going to look beautiful and natural for a certain patient’s body type and frame doesn’t have nearly as much to do with the specific type of implant as it does with her individual preferences.

Another thing that women should consider when they are thinking about the finished product after the operation is done is the chances of complications. Not only are smaller implants generally more natural looking—although obviously that depends on a patient’s size and stature—but the smaller implants tend to have a lower complication ratel. So that is something else to consider when a patient is determining which size is going to be best for her personal cosmetic goals.

These days, I would say the norm is that most women want a natural look. Oftentimes, I achieve that by inserting the breast implant underneath the muscle in a woman’s chest. That is the norm as far as how breast augmentations are done these days.

Women choose to undergo a breast augmentation for any number of reasons, and the overall look a woman is going for is usually related to the reason she is coming into my office in the first place. For some women, undergoing a breast augmentation is the result of losing a great amount of weight, which has led to a loss of fullness in the breasts. For others, the procedure can be a way to replace the contours of a breast that were lost due to disfigurement. And finally, some women simply decide that they need to undergo a breast augmentation procedure as a way to boost their self confidence.

Whatever the reason a woman is coming in, it is important that she discusses her cosmetic goals with her plastic surgeon prior to undergoing the augmentation procedure. These goals will largely determine the size of breast implant that she receives, as well as how “natural” the overall, finished outcome of the breast augmentation procedure will be.
