Minimizing Scars From a Breast Lift

With more than 15 years of experience, Dr. David Reid has become an expert in the field of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. At New Dimensions Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery in Belleville, Illinois, he has become renowned for his work on all types of patients with varying backgrounds. When it comes to breast lifts, many women are concerned about excess scarring. To help alleviate those fears, he explains what the scars from a breast lift procedure are really like.

For the vast majority of my breast lift patients, I am able to put their scar in a place where it is easily covered by lingerie or a swimsuit. So for many women who undergo this procedure, scarring is no longer visible whatsoever in the majority of situations.

When you are planning to undergo a breast lift procedure, it is important to choose a location to remove skin from the breast that is going to be as least visible as possible. Basically, you want to chose a location to remove the skin that is going be as easily hidden as you can find.

So the usual place that a scar will go—and this is when you are looking at a minimal breast lift, as opposed to a procedure where you are going to be fixing multiple things at once—is at a natural junction on the breast. If you use one of these natural junctions to make the incision, then the line around that junction will hide the scar quite well.

For patients who need a major procedure, we have other options available as a way to hide the scars on their beasts. One of these options, for women who have a severe droop in the breast, is what is known as an anchor pattern. That is essentially a circle that we have made around the areola as a way to hide the scar as much as possible.

Another option for patients is known the lollipop-style incision. The lollipop incision is when a plastic surgeon makes a cut around the patient’s areola, and then continues that incision underneath the breast.

Other incision options are somewhere in between the anchor style and the lollipop style. But the type of incision is best for an individual patient depends largely on her personal goals and needs. Patients should certainly talk with their surgeon about their options before going ahead with an incision style.

Nowadays, I have noticed that about two-thirds of the patients coming into my office for breast lift procedures are asking to have implants put in at the same time. This somewhat changes what incision options we have to choose from, so that is definitely another thing to talk with your plastic surgeon about if you are interested in that.

Like I’ve said before though, what is important is that patients feel comfortable speaking with their cosmetic surgeon and finding out which type of incision is going to give them the benefits they want, along with the minimal scarring that so many women desire. Finding that balance is really important for women who are interested in undergoing a breast lift procedure.
