Why Detoxify?

Think of the oil in your car. You cannot just change it once a lifetime and expect it to keep on running smoothly. Your body needs an regular oil change as well, in the form of regular detoxification, according to Dr. Helene Pulnik ND, Lac, a naturopathic physician. She owns Glastonbury Naturopathic Center and Wholistic Spa in Glastonbury, CT, and talks here about the different ways you can detoxify, and why you should do it on a regular basis.
Think for a moment about all the food and drink we have consumed over our lifetimes, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. It should be obvious to us all that over time, we accumulate a lot of toxins in our body, and that those toxins can do a lot more harm than good.
If you concentrate especially on the increase in the number of chemicals introduced into our environment over the last 50 years, you can readily see how that increase has resulted in an increase of incidences of auto-immune diseases, cancer, fertility problems and more.
Many toxins present in our everyday environment, including those that come from our food, are stored in the body and accumulate over time. That’s why it’s important to take time to get rid of them.
Detoxification is like changing the oil in your car. You don’t just do it once, but rather, it is a continuous thing that you need to do regularly to maintain optimal health.
Types of Detoxification
There are several ways in which an individual can choose to participate in a full or partial detoxification program. Some methods will require more time, while others will take less time and effort. Some also work best when used in conjunction with others. For the most part, they are:
- Diet, which means eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables
- Colon hydrotherapy – cleaning all the toxins gently from your body using water
- Sweating the toxins out of the body, including heavy metals, PCBs and pesticides
Benefits of Detoxifying
Detoxification can result in better energy, weight loss, correction of digestive issues, and lessening of migraine headaches and pain in the body. Simply puy, it can help your body function better overall.
Studies show that toxins in the body disrupt our hormonal systems. This can lead to birth defects, infertility, disease, and other such negative consequences. And when we say “hormonal system,” we are not just talking about reproductive hormones, but also the thyroid and other parts of the body as well. Toxins can interfere with many different functions in the body, not just the reproductive ones, which is why it’s so important to flush them out as often as reasonably possible.
